Mingus _ The Black Saint & The Sinner Lady what a record! i've must have listened to it close to 100 times now and it still catches me off guard. i immediately have to close my eyes as it's first notes roll out of the speakers. i swear, it's like my brain is moving, making rotations and like there are cylindrical fanns in my ears rushing in hot and cold air at the same time lol. what a record, what a phenomenal record. by the time it's only haflway through "Track B -Duet Solo Dancers" i usually feel like there's a small fever in my core and my whole body gets hot and tingly. who else loves this record? and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

Charles Mingus is the mad genius whose frenetic playing was for a purpose. He used his energies and talents in protest of the times he lived in.
I have heard this one is good. For now, I have Mingus Dynasty (my first Mingus record) Money Jungle (Mingus - Duke - Roach) Summertime (a compilation) Mingus Ah Um (a brilliant, complex album) My fave tracks: Slop Song of Orange Gunslinging Bird Summertime Switchblade Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

May have to pass on the "brain moving" part but I will have one "hot and tingly". To go, thank you. Don't need a bag. Will put this one on the list. I broke this cd out last sunday. It's like you can hear him losing sanity in the msuic. I can't listen to this often, but I break it out every now and again. It's a really interseting listen. "I'm a pig..so,magic elixir I swill"

I have his Atlantic Box set. Mingus is a great composer and great arranger. His use of instrumentation was profound for his time.
The box set comes with this interview of Mingus and Ahmet at the studio and Mingus is playing chords on the piano and Ahmet is talking to him about music and various topics. It's a cool box set. But I still want to get this Debut records 12 cd box: http://www.amazon.com/gp/...nce&n=5174 [Edited 3/29/06 10:14am]

Black Saint and the sinner lady is one of the most intense albums I've ever heard, every bit as intense in its own way as Master of Puppets (yes it's possible to be a Metallica fan and a Mingus fan). My favorite Mingus album is Mingus Ah Um, it was the album that made me a jazz fan.

i don't know why i don't have TBS&TSL in my library yet?
i think i've heard it before, just can't remember it. i've got a bunch of Mingus. ATM, it think my favorite tracks by him are Jump Monk From The Charles Mingus Quintet featuring Max Roach at The Bohemia album Hatian Fight Song From The Charles Mingus Quintet featuring Max Roach album (different from above title) Ecclusiatics From the Oh Yeah album. This song has so much spirit, it feels like someone caught inbetween heaven and hell. The lyrics are very haunting too. Definitely a fav.

My favorite Mingus album as well. Now I've got to get this album because you compared it to Master of Puppets. Damn. I saw a documentary on the man and wowm he was just so complex and brilliant. He composed this master piece that required an orchestra to play but never saw it happen during his lifetime, his wife actually put it together and had it played at a tribute concert. We should all be as lucky to have a woman like that.

Are you a big fan of jazz or just a casual listener? Very casual - I have a little Miles, a little Coltrane, a little Monk... that's really about it

And Yes! Roland and Mingus are a dangerous combination. if you listen closely you'll here Roland blow his whistle at some point during there recordings together. supposedly, this signified the music had reached a peak. btw, i think i'm gonna go out and pic up a copy of The Black Saint today, should i pick up 2?
