SPICE GIRLS APPRECIATION THREAD On a trip to the thrift store I bought their debut for 99 cent (I bought In Utero by Nirvana too but don't like it nearly as much). Needless to say I've been jamming to Spice the past couple of days (I don't know if I'll be doing it in the future cause the damn cassette player ate the tape. I'm seriously thinking about buying another one though.).
Anyway I remembered the first time I saw the video for Wannabe. Time has forgotten how utterly different it was at the time. This was before the Backstreet boyus and N'sync. Music (videos especially) were filled with either hardcore gangsta rap, generic hip hop, I hate my life rock, singer/songwriter acoustic posers (folk or whatever you called that hybrid of It in the mid 90's) and alternative stuff. I thought the video was old, maybe from the late 80's or 90-92. There wasn't anything like them when they first dropped. Atleast not here in the USA I've heard legends of Robbie WIlliams making a name for himself in Take That but I only recall one song form them making any kind of moderate buzz over here, and I think it was the last song before he left. Anyways just wanted to give a shout out to the Spice girls for ushering in the late 90's til about 2003 wave of pop music. They were definitely trend setters in their own premanufactured way. "Serve The Servants", "Scentless Apprentice", "Rape Me", "Heart Shaped Box", "All Apologies", "Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge", "Pennyroyal Tea", "Dumb" etc VS "Wannabe", "say you'll be there", "2 become 1", etc? I'll take Kurt, thank you very much. |

eh, I'll take the Spice Girls ANY day over nirvana. I hate that pathetic "I hate my miserable existence" rock. The 'Girls were a lot of fun, had great pop songs and were for the most part fucking awesome to look at. I regret Kurt's painful martyrdom, but Billy Corgan's songs were still 10x better

Nirvana >> Pumpkins. That's such a generalisation to make about Nirvana. Actually, if you explored their work you'd find it's incredibly artistic and has many intricate depths and subtleties. I can name you many songs that would not fit into your "i hate my life" generalisation at all. For example, "Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge on Seattle" is an incredibly profound song equating the eruptions of Mt. St Helens as being some form of payback for the tragic mistreatments of the 1930's/1940's American actress Frances Farmer. And I shouldn't even have to mention "Polly" - the highly ironic story of a girl being raped - told from the rapist's perspective. |

I love The Spice Girls but c'mon now, Nirvana is classic.
The girls were a step above general teen pop. More of an R&B sensibility and more overall energy and charisma. But I've noticed that the girls got a lot of writing credit on their albums when it's obvious they didn't have THAT much input into their creation. They'd most likely still be vital today if they had that much input. My theory.

I tend to generalize about Nirvana from what little I know of them. I appreciated how they killed Slaughter and Firehouse back in '91, but after a few years of seeing scraggly-ass hair and ironic bug glasses, I pretty much put them down for "miserable & angry". I'm probably not alone there. Dave Grohl has carried on the vibe with many angry, screaming hits. More power to him and the 'Fighters.

I like Dave, but he's nowhere near being the incredible poetic songwriter that Kurt was. And I do understand the misconceptions. Popularity tends to breed it. |

Awwww the Spice Girls get a appreciation thread. Here are my thoughts.
I actually HATED the spice girls when they first came out, I hated the image, thought it was silly and what not. However, I loved the track "Wannabe." I thought it was pop's finest (at that time.) *I was also in between Michael Jackson albums, so give me a break now.* Now years later, I'm really jamming on the CD "Spice" and a few tracks on the follow up album. The song "Goodbye" I think is also very well written, performed and produced. It makes me so sad listening to it. Beyond that, I love a lot of Emma's solo stuff. Also, one of them covered "Word Up" and I like that cover a lot. (Korn's is better IMO but they still pale in comparsion to Cameo.) Needless to say, I didn't appreciate them when they were a group and I hope that they do reunite. I heard some rumors of them coming together in 2006 to celebrate the sucess of "Wannabe" or something debuting. (I'll look for the article if anyone cares.) Does anyone know anything more about this...? At any rate, nice thread.

Does anyone know anything more about this...? Nothing will be happening this year since Geri's baby is due soon so she will be preoccupied with that obviously. I've also read that Mel C is definitely not into a reunion tour at this point. They could release a greatest hits CD without tour support, but nothing is concrete yet.

The first time was at the nightclub Nell's here in NYC. I was there celebrating my cousin's 21st birthday in 2001 and Mel was hanging out downstairs with some friends. I thought it could be her and when I heard the British accents, knew it had to be. I worked up enough courage to introduce myself to her before we left and told her how much of a fan I was and that I bought her solo album ('Hot') and loved it which was a lie at the time--my friend taped it for me and I didn't really care for it. I later bought it for real out of guilt. The second time was after her second performance in the play 'Rent'. My friend and I got tickets only because she was in it and we waited outside afterward until she came out. I took a picture with her. This was in 2004 which was notable because it was the same night as Prince's Musicology release party and I missed Prince's mini-performance at that event because I already had the Rent tickets. I figured there had to be some back in the day, Spice Girl fans creeping around the org. You are in good company! As a guy while I didn't jam on there music when they were out, and the it thing in pop culture, due to them being marketed towards girls, I did want to sleep with each of them or all of them at once.

I love their song Who Do YOu Think You Are "When Michael Jackson is just singing and dancing, you just think this is an astonishing talent. And he has had this astounding talent all his life, but we want him to be floored as well. We really donĀ“t like the idea that he could have it all."

That's Mel B (Scary Spice). I heard she was an exotic dancer before the Spice Girls. She is F.I.N.E. But her music? Yep, it's awful and I have the singles to prove it
