There are some really good amateur reviewers out there, though their numbers are dwarfed by the incredibly crappy ones of course.

I particularly like Mark Prindle's site. He's occasionally incoherent or flat-out stupid, sometimes apparently due to writing reviews in an alcohol-induced blackout (see his review of Aerosmith's Honkin' on Bobo for a pretty bad example), and he's a little too fixated on hardcore punk for my tastes, but overall I find him entertaining enough to forgive him for giving Blonde on Blonde a six out of ten.

He has his moments - I'm afraid he's pretty hard on Tori, though.

s'ok. I'm used to it by now.

I like reading bizarro, one of a kind reviews where professionalism, audience and clarity are the least of the writer's concerns. lol

I'd really love to write one of those 33 & 1/3 books where I'd have room to include all of my personal musings about a particular album. If I were to review music, I think my talents (whatever they may be) would be far better suited to that kind of setting.

Have you ever read any of them? I almost ordered the My Bloody Valentine, Neutral Milk and Prince volumes a few weeks back, but I backed off due to the price/relatively skimpy length. I've heard good things about the SOTT volume...

I've recently gotten the SOTT one, along with Bowie's "Low" and Joy Division's "Unknown Pleasures". Haven't gotten around to reading 'em yet. They'll probably end up as 'travel reads' for me. I should bust out the Prince one out though, as I'm getting hardcore into him again for the first time in a couple years.

Salon is decent and it has lots of free downloads (although may need to be a subscriber to get them. not sure)

I end up at mp3.com a lot, but that is mostly a result of google hits rather than me seeking out the site on my own. Their reviews are ok and they cover bands I want to read about.

pitchfork is too cool for me sometimes, but I read them.

Pitchfork's Nick Sylvester, who also writes for the Village Voice, was recently busted for making shit up in a recent Village Voice story (seems to be a lot of that going around lately). lol

I need to check out cokemachineglow. thanks for the tip. wink
