My Newest Music Reference Acquisition

It will be in my hands on Tuesday. Look for periodic postings on 70s pop chart positions, whether you like it or not! lol I only wish Record Research would release a similar series of decade books about the R&B charts.

falloff I already am sorta. This book is fun (for a geek like me), because it's the full Hot 100 chart for every week from the 1970s! Mostly I like these sort of references so that I can turn myself onto new music. That's why I love my other Billboard book:

You ain't kiddin'. I have a whole shelf full of Joel Whitburn books including: The Top Albums, Hot 100 Singles, R&B Singles, R&B Albums, Rock Tracks, Dance/Disco tracks, and Bubbling Under the Hot 100. I'm always looking up something in one of them.

lol I'd love to know what she has to say about this.

I wear my badge proudly. And according to my R&B Top Hits book, Steely Dan only charted one R&B hit - Hey Nineteen made it to #68 in 1981. Not shocking, I guess. I'm surprised they had even one R&B hit. The #1 song when I was born was Doing It to Death by Fred Wesley & THE J.B.'s. The #1 song when CinisterCee was born was Fantasy by Mariah Carey.

They're great books. I've been bugging them to release an R&B equivalent of the Hot 100 decade charts books. I'd love a week by week account of the R&B chart from the 1970s and 1980s. Despite the fact that I've requested this from them at least 3 times, I've yet to hear back from them on the suggestion. I have, however, received a no-contact order from their attorneys.

I was only 10 at the time, but every week would listen to Kasey Kasem and write down the top 40 and share them with my friend Celeste when she missed the show. I remember "Another One Bites the Dust" being number one. biggrin

That's how I got started--listening to American Top 40 every Sunday. Then my friend's dad had a Billboard subscription so he used to bring the magazines over all the time.

Another One Bites the Dust went #2 R&B. lol Enough already. And, yeah, I was an addict for Kasem's top 40 show. There were so many different charts outside of Billboard back then.

If it was a non-Billboard chart then I wasn't interested. When Casey Kasem started doing his own Casey's Top 40 countdown, I stopped listening.

Promises - Eric Clapton
Hot Child in the City - Nick Gilder
I Will Survive - Gloria Gaynor

have no idea why those stick in my brain lol

No. It's the "Snuggles the Dog" clip.

I couldn't find the separate Kasem U2 rant. confused
The complete Negativland cut is online though:

It's in Real Audio format which hardly ever works for me. disbelief

I bought that book two years ago! It's absolutely incredible. You get to go back and re-live every week of the 70s,and watch the songs work their way up (and down) the charts.I get really nostalgic when I read this book, and I often use it for my many 70s threads.

The book isn't cheap though.I think I paid nearly $80 for it,but it is well worth it.

That's exactly what I want...a book that contains a week-by-week account of the R&B charts from the 70s.I have alot of questions that need to be answered, lol.Hopefully, they will release a book like this in the future.

Is this book any good? I've been thining about ordering it.Does it list the dates when the songs first appeared on the charts? If you have the book nearby, can you do me a favor and find out some info for me?

Question: when did Tavares's song "Never Had A Love Like This Before" debut on the charts? I know it's from 1979,I'm just trying to find out the exact date when it was on the charts. This question has been nagging at me for years, lol.

Yeah, the Record Research site wants $80 for it. Amazon has it for around $50.

It's an excellent book! Yes, it lists the date songs debuted on the chart. They released a new and updated version a couple of years ago:

The previous book includes chart data up until the date 31 July 1999, and the updated one has info through 2004. Aside from that, there is another interesting difference. Between 30 November 1963 and 23 January 1965, there was no R&B singles chart. There was so much cross over between the charts (meaning the pop chart was dominated by R&B hits) that Billboard chose not to publish any R&B singles chart at all. For the 1999 book, they researched the pop charts and "determined" which songs would have made the R&B chart. Their methodology for the 2004 book was to take data from the Cash Box R&B Singles Top 50 chart. This is when the Motown era was reallly blossoming. If you order the newer book, you might wanna do so from Amazon. They have it for roughly $20 cheaper.

Tavares' Never Had a Love Like This Before debuted on the R&B chart on 25 November 1978. It peaked at #5 and remained on the charts for 22 weeks. biggrin
