prince puts out far more material than MJ. But MJ's albums are generally better than prince's. MJ takes his time and after 3-5 years work hits you with a brilliant album. prince is the opposite. He release albums every year but only has a few gems on each album. MJ's albums are perfect, and the time he spends to work on each one really shows. The time prince spends on each album also shows. I think prince can learn from MJ and take his time with music. I think he's find, and the fans would find he could produce better material if he spent 3+ years on each album, like MJ does. I also find that prince doesn't have what MJ has. There's something about MJ. Now, as an example, I am so damn excited about the future of MJ with all this news about working with 50 cent and John Legend. New MJ music gets me wet. New prince music is just like 'yeah....so?' because it's so often that we get new music from prince. With MJ it is exciting and always a big event when he releases a new album.

There again, you can spend 3 years and just end up with a derivative album like Invincible. The reason MJ albums take so long to come out is not because he's constantly working tirelessly on a few songs to get them just right, but because he takes huge breadks going off on holiday and spending sprees and collecting spurious awards all the time!

There is also another reason that MJ takes so long to relased a project: MJ insist on working with whom ever the "hot" producers are. All of those producers are "hot" because they are all busy making hits for several artist. It's take a great deal of time to schedule these producers because they are quite busy. They are not just sitting around waiting for MJ to call.
It could take 2 to 6 years to actually get the number of producers that MJ works with, in a room to "produce" some music. That's the MAIN reason that it takes so long. Trust me.....

Sorry, but what you say doesn't make sense to me.

So, let's just assume you're right with everything you said (which I don't think, but anyway). What's the benefit for an MJ fan that your "hero" records 70 or 80 songs, only 10 to 14 end up on the final album and you never get to hear the rest? Let's just assume Prince would do the same, I can name you a lot of great songs (beside some "filler", o.k.) which have been released but would now be unknown (or only circulating in bad bootleg quality) because of this self-censorship of the "MJ system" if Mr. Nelson copied it. How can you as a fan be happy with your favourite artist self-limitating his own output and defend it as a good strategy? I would be embarrassed if I was an MJ fan...

Just to add a little to what I posted before:

You want Prince to do MJ (publicationwise)? Fine, just burn a "best of" of Prince every 3-5 years, there you got your MJ...

Michael has made some very good music and some very bad decisions in life.

It doesn't matter if Prince is better then Michael. Taste is subjective and your desire to analyze the two is juvenile.

When you talk about "Master Pieces" who defines what that is? Is it me the subjective listener or the American buying public?

Walk down the street and ask any person randomly name one Prince album between 1990-2000, not one could tell you unless they were fans like ourselves.

Do the same for Michael Jackson... you will get a different result.

The Bad album was considered a master piece. Do you forget that 5 No.1 hits came from that album. The most any single album has ever produced then and now. (That record still stands...)

I love Prince. I think Prince is a fabulous musician. However, if you ask the average person who would they consider to be a better music artist they will undeniably tell you Michael Jackson. Try it...

I have never doubted the skills of Prince. Unlike some of you who throw around insults as if Michael Jackson is just some puppet with zero talent going into a recording studio.

Don't just say great promotion went into how the albums sold.

Dangerous had great hits on the album and it is ranked in the top 100 of the best albums of all time. I can only think of 1 Prince album that made it in the top 100 albums of all time. Purple Rain...

Remember,

You and I can debate this until we are blue in the face and never come to a consensus, but if you walk down the street you will be sadly dissapointed because Michael Jackson would win hands down... even given his personal struggles.

As I've said before...

The facts speak for themselves. Michael Jackson rivals Prince not just on the commerical level but also artisticly. Do not dismiss Michael Jackson as just to say he had great producers to back him up. Michael Jackson is a pop recording artist. He makes music for the masses to listen to. As a pop recording artist the record label has to create music with him to accomplish just that, and they did.

From 1979-2001 Michael Jackson sold more records than any other solo artist in the business and made more money doing it too.

The fact of the matter is the American Public gets to decide what a master piece is deemed to be and overwhelmingly they choose albums they bought.

Before I became a Prince fan I knew of two Prince albums... Purple Rain and Musicology... and the majority of the public would say the same.

Good,

Prince tears up the guitar... absolutely... he can write his ass off...

Michael Jackson from 1984-1997 embarked on 3 World Tours that broke attendance and television audience records.

Michael Jackson is known for his incredible stage performance. He honed his skills as a singer and dancer.

Michael Jackson vs Prince

You take your pick, because I've taken mine...

As I've said before, that's all well and good, MJ has an impressive PAST, but in the here and now Prince wins hands down simply because MJ hasn't released an album since 2001. MJ today is sadly a former shadow of himself. I hope he does release a new album soon and it is great - but you already know what you're going to get - a beatbox driven sound enhanced by the latest hot producers, lots of 'Oooows' and yelps with a few sappy ballads about 'why won't someone please think of the children?!' With Prince, you never know what you're going to get, other than it will be interesting and uniquely Prince.

Prince has an impressive past too. I remember back when his albums used to enter the UK charts at #1.

I think you're really shortchanging 'current' Michael a fair bit, scratch the surface of the popstar and you wil find an artist at work. The unrealeased demos and outtakes on his box set alone are proof of that, plus released gems like Whatever Happens, Morphine, Butterflies and Stranger in Moscow show his range in the last decade or so.

Great vocalist, always has been and always will.

As for Michaels vocal yelps, so what? Prince has been going "AwooaA!" for how long exactly? yeah, forever. lol

.
The average person thinks Jessica Simpson is changing the musical landscape...if sales were a good guage of musical merit Silly Vanilly would be going to the rock and roll hall of fame...that said.
It’s amazing to me how this topic keeps resurfacing each year. On one hand I do understand…They’re both black, both operate in the same musical space- dance/R&B, both had their hey-days in the mid 80s, and both were considered legendary performers.
But that’s where the comparison basically ends. MJ changed the way we interpret and digest music through his use of video. He had a signature dance style that etched itself into the fabric of American dance history…though he did little to extend that from the mid 80s on. Prince certainly could dance and had a unique dancing style but he was not the accomplished dancer that Jackson was. Prince’s video’s were more of a side piece, a lesser companion to the art. His dancing was part of an overall performer that far exceeded just being able to dance and sing. And this is where they really split…Prince’s greatness is in his ability to not just sing and dance- but as U2 said- he’s much more than that. It’s his overall ability to put on a stage show that showcased singing, dancing (where Michael can certainly hang) but also, at the same time, his dazzling array of musical chops playing guitar, synth, drums, piano. Furthermore his stunning range from deep blues, to hard rock, to jazz to R&B to funk to to pop rock- he was and is a master of many styles. When I say that Prince is a far better performer than Michael Jackson it’s because be brings the full weight of all of this to his better concerts- playing, performing, singing, rearranging songs, going effortlessly from genre to genre. MJ can’t compete because he doesn’t do all these things and really was never driven to expand artistically.
Musically- prince’s heyday is comparable only to some of the most prolific artists in rock history. I believe only the Beatles had a period of higher quality output than Prince. If you study Prince’s watershed years from 1980 to 1988 his landmark albums advanced the musical landscape with a breadth rarely seen in pop music. For example, 1999’s influence can be heard from NIN to Stevie Nicks to Justin Timberlake to Outkast. And I don’t just mean they dug the album. There are musical ideas that ring throughout music today. In many ways that album legitimized the use of drum machines and synthesizers in rocks music. Up until that point if a synth cropped up in a rock song it always was regarded as cheesy and in most cases it was. A great article, I believe in Music magazine in the mid 80s once said that Prince proved that drum machines can have a heart provided the person doing the programming has a heart.
I’ve seen some people actually try and compare MJ and Prince’s history lyrically. If you want to compare the 90s output that’s fine but MJ’s lyrics- the ones he wrote- don’t come anywhere near Prince 80s genius. From the stark imagery of WDC to the stripped down funk of Kiss there’s a reason Prince can’t compete with Prince anymore. Go back to that landmark 1999 album and culled away on the B side you’ll find a depth and intelligence of lyric often and easily overlooked. Prince, at his best, produced lyrics that reflected the music and often music that reflected the lyrics. Automatic tells the tale of a person in an obsessive love affair- the whole song trudges along on a hypnotic synth line beautifully reflecting the transfixed state of the singer and then delves into sadomasochism to metaphor the dangers of fixated love. The following song Something in the water does not Compute finds our protagonist hurt time and time again only to emerge as the spiteful player on Lady Cab Driver where he gets down and dirty dedicating each pelvic thrust to some item of his lover or hate. That sequence alone can be analyzed for weeks. It’s brilliant stuff- deep, layered, knowingly smart and whimsical. There’s nothing in jackson’s catalog that even approximates this stuff. And I haven’t even touched LRC widely considered one of Rocks’ great metaphor songs. Or take the one offs- the gender bending role reversal of If I was your girlfriend, the simplicity of the lovers request in Kiss beautifully reflected in the minimalist arrangement and stripped down sound.
For what it’s worth Prince also blew the doors open on taboo subjects- after Sister everything rappers would do would just be in Prince’s footsteps. I remember reading an article that declared prince the Uncle of Rap because he gave them the young, cocksure black male exuding his sexuality attitude. Let’s not forget the Prince of dirty mind was ballsy and challenging in a way MJ never approximated. You’ll either get this next sentence or you won’t…Prince was once rock; MJ was never rock.
Hmm- we haven’t even discussed his chameleon changes, forays into Jazz, his brilliant side projects, his legendary post concert, concerts- for christ’s sake the guy created a side group- the time- that was enormous and spawned two of the music industries great producers.
Need we also forget Performed, arranged, composed and written by…
Someone also said MJ records thousands of songs but wants quality control. That’s a poor way to dismiss Prince’s prolificacy. The bodies of work are what they are and prince’s is a manifesto of brilliance during his heyday. The warts are there now as he approaches his late 40s but during his great period there was a quantity and quality in abundance.
Look – I respect Michael Jackson and he deserves his place as one the more influential performers with respect to dance and videos. But to compare him to Prince when all things are considered is disrespectful to Princes prodigious gifts.

Where would Michael Jackson be without Quincy Jones?
Quincy was responsible for the music behind his best album ever "Off The Wall" and the follow up Thriller. Were it not for Rod Temperton who co-wrote most of the tracks where would he have been left lyrically? "ma ma say ma ma saa coo mack coo saa" what the hell is that?

The "man" and I use that word sparingly, was a good entertainer, but beside that he aint shit.

Had a good voice as a kid, one of the best I ever heard. But now it's all about ooh aah and hee hee hee.

What a waste of a face, career and talent.

Prince reigns supreme from day one....Listen to the song "For You" and let me know if Michael Jackson has that much singing talent or even the imagination to come up with a master piece like that.

And when the hell did Michael ever learn to play the piano?
Let me know the track or where I can find the DVD of him performing this stunt?

Michael had the best selling album of all time....but Prince emerged as the most influencial artist of the '80's. If every musician tried to sound like Prince even Rick James with his "Glow" album and video, how could Michael Jackson be better?

Wake up and smell a blunt my friend.....get your head out of your ass....or post this shit on a Michael Jackson fan site.

Excellent.

LOL I have hated the age old "MJ versus Prince" comparison since it started in the 80's because there is absolutely NO comparison and I don't get it. Normally I wouldn't dignify a thread such as this with a response, however, to humour u what the hell...I'll bite & keep it simple.. here goes...

Hot chicks: Prince - Mayte, Vanity, Carmen Electra, etc. etc.
MJ - none

MJ-Lisa Marie Presley, Brooke Shields, Naomi Campbell, etc.

Constant molestation charges brought against them: Prince - NONE
MJ - SEVERAL
Big fuggin deal. Were any of them true? NO!

Musicianship: Prince - Plays ALL instruments, BRILLIANTLY I might add!
MJ - Plays ZIP, ZERO

MJ- piano, percussion, guitar

Staying true to oneself: Prince - All day Every day
MJ - IDENTITY CRISIS!! Started out as a nice looking brotha, but turned into a self image hating psycho

-because he was forced into being in front of thousands of people even as a preteen! would you not be a little self-conscious?

Oscars achieved: Prince - 1
MJ - ZERO

Ill give you that one. MJ hasnt fully persued the film medium yet though.

Vox: Prince - Has so much melodic transition & does things with his voice that MJ only WISHES he could do
MJ - Same boring tone on every song he's ever sung

-thats b.s. Every single album has different voices! Does the "Rock With You" voice sound like "Scream" voice?

Lyrically: Prince - Can go from raw passion and sexuality to spiritual divinity in one fell swoop!! His songs can be as deep or as shallow as he wants to be...his songs can make u think while shakin your ass.
MJ - same theme..."save the children" blah, blah, blah, yeah save them so he can get a shot at them!! Perv!!

-me now thinks that you have only heard on MJ album. Blatant ignorance.

Style: Prince - Designer suits, tailored with class, pure sexyness!
MJ- Looks like he jumped off the captain crunch cereal box!!

WTF?! U are comparing their fashion tastes? OMG! Prince has put on some of the most atrocious shit ive ever seen? 'Class' my ass.

Ok, I'm not wasting anymore of my time on this discussion just adding my

twocents Peace and b wild!

That might be the most ignorant post ive ever read here. Btw, ive added my responses into the above quote.

Brooke Shields deny's having anything sexual to do with the freak, as does Tatum O'neal and Lisa Presley hasn't forgiven herself for her stupidity to this day.

All Prince's chicks have brag about their relationships, Vanity still hasn't gotten over him and it's been over 20 years.
Fuck with that

I've said this before and I'll say it again....

Prince and Michael Jackson are my 2 favorite musicians/artists/performers. As a huge fan of both, let me give you 10 reasons that I like Prince better.

1. Prince has more music. Prince simply has a ton more music than MJ for his fans to listen to. Some will argue that MJ has less "crappy music" and that he has a better filter however, besides being a totally subjective statement, this is simply not true. Pound for pound, MJ has made just as much "average" music as Prince has. As a fan of both, I am happy to have stacks of Prince Albums and sad to have roughly 6 legit MJ albums since 1979. Waiting 5+ years between MJ albums sucks and lately it hasn't been worth the wait. If I don't like Prince's latest album, within a year or so I'll have a new one.

2. It is arguable who is a better live performer. Critics and fans alike both herald Prince and MJ as two of the best showman ever. Take your pick. That being said, Prince Concerts are more "live" than MJ. Prince's shows are not as rehearsed and are more spontaneous-the energy is different. Plus, Prince's live show is not the same as it has been since 1988. The fact is that, they are both great and you cannot definitively say one is head and shoulders above the other in this regard. MJ cannot work an audience like Prince. Prince's shows are more audience involving than MJ. MJ's shows are like going to a movie. It's a performance that could happen the same no matter the audience. Because of the nature of his concerts, Prince always takes the crowd into account and his concerts change based on the crowd. When did MJ last let audience members (who weren't planted groupies) up onstage to dance? Prince has an actual band that he leads, guides, and plays with. MJ just has hired musicians put together for a tour. Sheryl Crow used to play with him and was quoted as saying that MJ didn't know her name. I assure you, Prince knows his band.

3. It is easier to defend Prince's actions. Hey Prince changed his name to an unpronounceable symbol-super weird right? However, it is rock star weird. MJ used to just be rock star weird, now he is scary and creepy weird. MJ's personal life has overshadowed his art, and forced his music to take a back seat to his circus and court appearances.

4. Prince evolves. Don't get me wrong, as a fan of MJ I realize he has grown as an artist. However, every one of his albums is chasing after "Thriller", both in style, and in sales figures. Prince is not constantly trying to top, redo, outdo, or copy "Purple Rain". MJ got himself in a rut.

5. Prince has more variety to his music. Sure, MJ's pop sweeps over different genres, but not as aggressively as Prince does it. When was the last time MJ did a solo acoustic guitar album? A solo piano album? An instrumental album? A blues rock album? A jazz/funk album? Not only does Prince do different types of music from album to album. Often, he'll do it from song to song on one album. Hardly anyone crosses genres as effectively as Prince. MJ definitely does not.

6. Prince is more true to himself musically. Lately, MJ has gotten into the habit of hiring a load of "hot" producers to give him the latest sound, but it makes MJ's music seem contrived, forced, and not authentic. Even, when Prince is biting new trends he still sounds like Prince. He sounds authentic. You might not like Prince's rapping, but "pussy control" is an authentic club anthem whether you like it or not. MJ singing things like "2000 Watts" seems artificial and forced-it's hard to believe MJ feels what he is singing.

7. Prince is more accessible to his fans. I know this sounds weird, but Prince often opens up his recording studios for his fans to tour- as MJ does with Neverland. However, the difference is the fact that Prince will often do intimate late night shows at his place with a few hundred fans. These gigs used to cost maybe $7. Often they were free. Prince casually walks amongst the crowd at these shows and just hangs out. I bet you'd be hard pressed to name another "reclusive" superstar of Prince's magnitude that allows his hardcore fans to get so close.

8. Prince's lyrical themes are more varied and more mature. How many monster and ghost songs can MJ do? How many of us still relate to that? Prince's music is often accused of being all sexual, but the fact is that his relationship based lyrics are more complex than MJ, more sincere, and more believable. Love, romance, sex, and God are questions and themes that all humans ask and deal with. Prince explores these themes with authenticity and an understanding that MJ has rarely, if ever, been able to capture. Prince also can do the fantastical, kid's stuff-look at the "batman" album. That album was fairly complex and mature for a superhero album.

9. Onstage- Prince sings. Prince dances. Prince plays guitar. Prince plays piano/keyboard. Prince plays drums. Prince plays bass guitar.

Onstage-MJ dances, MJ sings. We MJ fans often argue that he does these better than anyone else. That is opinion.

Fact is- Prince does more onstage than MJ. He does all of these really really well. Better singer and dancer than MJ? Some think so. However, without a doubt Prince is more varied onstage than MJ.

10. Prince has hot female backup dancers. MJ's back up dancers seem like Madonna's leftovers.
"New Power slide...."

Who is better - The Beatles or Frankie Avalon!!!!!

or, Led Zeppelin vs. WINGER!!!!

or perhaps, Madonna vs. Stacey Q!!

I like Stacey Q, personally. Two of Hearts.... Two hearts that beat as one.

1)When Prince sings about making love to a woman it's believable
2)When Michael grabs his crotch, it's to check if there is anything there

3) When Prince sings about "sincerely wanting to fuck the taste out of your mouth" it is sung to a girl, not a little boy

4) Michael has been sued twice by the parents of his "little friends"....Prince..never
