Don't get me wrong I absolutely love Michael JAckson. However, somebody needs to call up 1985 and tell people like "thedoveoflove" that the war is over.
Prince won. Look at the state MJ's life/career, then look at Prince's. Sadly, MJ is seen as a tragic figure of epic proportions and a national punchline. [Edited 3/26/06 7:51am] "New Power slide...."

I thought metalorange's thoughts were spot on, if a little lacking in empathy for Michael Jackson. But he has become a difficult celebrity to feel for. I enjoy MJ as a singer and performer, and I admit when he's at the top of his game no one can match him. Stuff like "Man in the Mirror" and "Will You Be There" are tremendous pop songs. He really has good populist instincts and what sounds and hooks can electrify the masses. But it's going to take generations to clean up the ugliness of the child molestation charges. The whole thing is unsavory, whether he's innocent or guilty, and it has done serious damage to his legacy. And musically "spent force" is an apt description. "Invincible" and "Dangerous" hardly connected with me; they sounded so distant and petty. I sincerely hope Michael Jackson can gather his life together and become creative again. Once upon a time he was freakishly joyful and awe-inspiring.

I've also since 1996 liked Prince. i would say now hes my second favorite artist. To be honest I consider Prince to be a poor mans Michael Jackson, but he puts out albums on a regular basis and i find most of them enjoyable, but never to the level of MJ's. Prince helps fill the time between Michael's albums. I would say Michael is a far better singer, Dancer and songwriter. I also Think his live shows are the best ever. As far as musicainship goes prince can play more but I think Michael is maybe better on piano. Prince is good but he at his best for me when doing pop type music and whenhe does I always hear Michaels influence in that music. For me Michael is a 10/10 Prince a 8/10 U're kidding about the piano part right?! Anyway Prince 10/10 MJ 7/10

MJ fans have a hard enough time as it is without people acting like trolls for no reason. some of us are mutually fans of both P and MJ and believe it or not can separate Prince and MJ quite easily. i've never compared the two, never will. different merits. I agree Heal The World isn't one of MJ's better efforts, but Prince has left a few floaters you can't flush away in his time too.

Off The Wall is such a phenomenonally good album. But it was all downhill from there. I don't think Thriller is as good as Off The Wall as an overall album. But anyway, those two albums together are the pinnacle of MJ's musical achievements. And he only wrote maybe 7 or 8 songs from them both. Bad was a pile of crap. The first half of Dangerous is awful, although the second half does get better. HIStory was ambitious and while I think there are some fantastic songs on there, it doesn't work as an album - and I'd guess that MJ knew that a lot of the material on HIStory was weak and that's why he bundled a greatest hits with it. Since then, MJ has done nothing. And don't talk about BOTD or Invincible. They both came and went without anyone even noticing. So since the release of Off The Wall in 1979, MJ released one more strong album followed by three lame efforts that followed the same blueprint for an album over and over again. Since 1995, he has pretty much done nothing but release greatest hits package after greatest hits package. And if you take Dangerous up until the present day, there are maybe twenty songs that are worth mentioning. Twenty over fifteen years? That's pathetic.
Now onto Prince. When MJ was writing DSTYGE, Prince was writing, composing, producing and performing entire albums by himself. And those albums are critically acclaimed, and absolutely brilliant. When MJ was releasing Bad, something made out of MIDI and other shoddy production techniques with poor songwriting to match (Just Good Friends?), Prince was releasing Sign O' The Times. An album that skipped form one genre to another masterfully and effortlessly, and where the lyrical content was jaw-dropping, and which still sounds timeless. Bad, on the other hand, sounds sooo dated now. And that's before we get to the point that over the course of the eighties, MJ released only Thriller and Bad. In comparison, Prince released 1999, PR, Parade, ATWIAD, Sign O' The Times. And at least three of those are considered masterpieces. Fair enough, Prince's nineties' output was contentious. But then he did release massed of material and when you wade through it all there are still so many examples of musical genius and brilliant, brilliant songs. You could take just the Gold Experience and Emancipation, and once you pick the best songs from both and do the same with MJ's nineties output. Prince trumps MJ by a mile, and that's before you consider Love Symbol, Diamonds and Pearls, Rave, etc. As live performers, Prince again beats MJ. MJ does the same crotch-grabbing, moonwalking stuff over and over again. He's been performing Billie Jean the exact same way over and over again since the early eighties. No improvisation, no attempt to experiment or anything. Prince mixes things up all the time. He jams, he improvises and when he's on stage the audience witnesses nothing but raw talent and musicianship. Look at the performances at SNL or the Brits. All Prince needed for an awe-inspiring performance was a microphone and a guitar. And it was 100% live. MJ needs backing dancers, fireworks and all sorts of other crap. Add to that the fact that most of his performances are mimed. So, all in all, Prince beats the crap out of MJ. The volume of his material is amazing. His sognwriting skills are phenomenal. His musicianship is unrivalled. And as a live performer he's been consistently awesome. MJ is the most over-hyped pop star in history. Prince is an artist. Period. Prince 10/10 MJ 3/10

jlpugh said: Let me remind someone of one fact when they Michael Jackson is a "spent force". I think you all would agree with me in saying that when Prince was just getting his debut album off the ground, Michael Jackson already had 6 No.1 Hits to his credit and had released 16 albums with the Jacksons. He and his brothers had already carried out 7 successful world tours. They had already sold between 50-75 million albums worldwide. Michael Jackson was a musical force before Prince released his first album. Michael Jackson had already been a musical prodigy 10 years before Prince. Michael Jackson has been in the music industry for nearly 40 years.
All that's true, but going over what happened in the past doesn't defeat the argument that he is spent force NOW. Both MJ and Prince were born in the same year. MJ was thrust into the music biz at too early an age and missed a normal childhood, whereas Prince finished school, etc before entering the music biz. This meant that although he missed out on all those hit singles, albums and tours, Prince has grown up relatively grounded whereas MJ has endlessly moaned about missing his childhood, and while trying to recapture it has ironically missed most of his adolescent and adult years! You could therefore argue that the reason MJ is now a spent force is BECAUSE of all that success you cherish. I say he's a spent force on the evidence of not even being able to get a charity single out after much fanfare announcing that he was going to do it. In fact, is he even making music? Last I heard, he'd accepted a position as some sort of media consultant for an entertainment company that Sheik with whom he's staying is setting up. Alot of Michael Jackson's songs have very complexed sound effects and futuristic and innovative that alot is created by Michael Jackson's skill as a beat boxer. Which only few artist actually are able to do. Alot of his beats he creates are done on the beat box.
He certainly used to be futuristic and innovative. But Invincible just sounded like him doing the same stuff over again. C'mon, beatbox is not that hard to do, it's not the amazing musical talent you make it out to be. Besides, the fact that practically every song he does is based on his own beatbox rhythm is one of the very reasons why his music is sounding so repetitive these days - if he actually played more musical instruments he might be able to come up with more complex and interesting song patterns. Agreed, Prince is a much more electic musican, but don't dismiss Michael Jackson as being just the same. Michael Jackson is also held to a much higher stand than Prince, believe it or not. When Michael Jackson released Invincible is sold respectfully 2.5 million copies in the U.S. and estimated 10 million worldwide, the industry called it a flop. Prince released Musicology and everyone called it a commercial comeback. The double standard is clear.
I'd agree with that - MJ albums always sell far better than music journalists would have you believe. However, that is a lot to do with the huge amount of expensive promotion they receive which usually Prince's albums don't have. MJ's albums HAVE to sell well, because the huge expense of the promotion coupled with the lavish production costs and in-producer salaries mean they cost a fortune to make! MJs fortune is a lot more to do with making money from the Beatles catalogue he owns than from album sales. Michael Jackson has remained he hates to tour, because it is grueling in the body. If Michael Jackson needed a source of income Michael Jackson could easily go on tour and make just as much or more than Prince.
That maybe true, but the last tour MJ did I saw footage of he was miming the WHOLE show, which was a rip-off for fans and a far cry from when he sung and danced the whole show live. A tour is gruelling for any artist, but the reason MJ can't hack it anymore is due to the way he has treated his body with the operations on his face and nose, and not having the mental strength to deal with it all anymore. He shouldn't be dismissed as just spent energy as if he has come and gone. He is still here and none of us know what he has left in him. His musical prowess just doesnt go away. He has a gift that was given to him from God and he will use it at his own time and place.
I really hope MJ does come back with something amazing, I really do, I just think he's gone so far from reality I'm not sure he can make it back. I mean, only MJ would go from living in his own fantasy world ranch playground to living in a Sheik's palace! He can no longer be so wasteful with his money and spend fortunes making an album and expect expensive promotion to carry the album along.

a couple of things that stuck in mind of an impressionable fan like myself between the two over the years since their heyday:
the nature of their respective "retreats", Neverland and Paisley Park: Prince's was in his hometown and completely musically oriented. Michael's always concentrated on the eccentricity and the escape from reality, never mentioning music. the nature of their collaborations: with Michael it was always hot producers: Quincy Jones, Rodney Jerkins, Teddy Riley. With Prince it was always musical legends or proteges: Larry Graham, Chaka Khan, Maceo Parker, George Clinton, Miles Davis, and we all know the proteges ... It's as if Prince has always been reverent to the past and looking towards the future, while Mike has been about ... something else ... lol
