Jill Scott Lets talk about Jilly from Philly.
I love her debut record. The poetry, the vocals, "Exclusively," "The Way," "It's Love," "Love Rain..." Also heard her stuff on the new Block Party soundtrack and it's off the hook. Although I don't like her version of "You Got Me"...I know she wrote the hook and Erykah was just the singer on the original and took home the Grammy...blah blah blah forget that mama drama. Anyhow I've seen Jill live and it was the bomb. Her style is so diverse and she has so much range in her voice and her band was awesome. But then...2 things...1) it seems you have to either pick a side, Badu or Jill. And you know what side I pick on that one. Critics seem to favor Jill over Badu of late. and 2) As much as I liked some songs, "Beautifully Human" was a disappointment for sure. Anyhow lets talk about her. I'll leave it alone babe...just be me

Actually, Jill wrote AND sang the hook on the original version of "You Got Me", Badu asked Ahmir why did they need her (Badu) when this chick did a great job singing the hook in the first place. And who claims u have to choose sides? I've never heard anyone say u have to choose between Badu and Jill. Living to die and I'll die to live again - 360 degrees - comprehend

I've always enjoyed myself at a Jill Scott concert. Beautifully Human is a bit mellow and love-filled so it caters more to the romantics and I admit it can be a bit too mellow at a show. I hope her next album is more popping and even though I don't run BH much I do catch my self running a song here and there.
Anyhoo, I don't think you have to pick one or the other. It seems most audiences like both. However Erykah appeals to those a little more outside the box. I also think her shows are more exciting. Erykah's coming to NYC in May btw... [Edited 3/24/06 14:12pm] Been gone for a minute, now I'm back with the jump off

I wasn't feelin' her in the beginning (when I first started really getting into music), REALLY dug her for a little bit after giving her a second chance.. and now don't really like her again.
She IS a great artist in her own right and I can definitely see (or hear, as it were) her appeal: From a gorgeous voice to a gift for melody to mad skills with a pen, she's got it all. But, for me, personally, after falling in love with the likes of Erykah, Lauryn, and Me'Shell (currently my favorite soul women), her music sounds too much like clean-cut vegetables, as opposed to the meat 'n potatoes of those other three.

Jill Scott is a one-hit wonder.
Without "Gettin' in the Way" which is a bad jam, which I love, her first album would have came and gone with not much fanfare. Erykah Badu is another matter entirely. She has proved her staying power. Her last album was great, she is no joke live, and she truly does not give a fuck. Jill Scott has not stood the test of time, and neither has the genre she embodies - neo-soul. I grew up in the 70s so best believe you're gonna get judged by the standard that was set at that time - Chaka Khan, Teena Marie, Candi Staton, Lyn Collins, Mavis Staples, Ann Wilson, Chryssie Hynde etc. While I allow that is a very high standard, I must say Jill is nowhere near it. And that includes songwriting.

I absolutely love Jill Scott. I love Erykah, too but I listen to Jill's live album practically every day.
I, too prefer her live over her recorded stuff.

But you reasoning for why doesn't make sense because you can make that same argument for EVERY artist that drops: "If it wasn't for their 1st hit then they woulda came and gone without any fanfare." In that case you can even ask where would Badu be without "On & On"? Badu is around because she doesn't drop a lot of material to constantly judge her by. 2 albums and that bullshit EP she dropped and that's it and she's been out a decade already while Jill dropped in 2000 and has had 2 studio releases and a live double CD in just 6 years of being in the game. Jill deserves her props for staying in the game while dropping material. Living to die and I'll die to live again - 360 degrees - comprehend

I'll leave it alone babe...just be me

Yeah, I forgot about her bomb ass live CD, but I also don't really count the guest appearances as anything either, although I really liked "Love of My Life" from the Brown Sugar soundtrack. But stuff like that won't suffice me, I needs ALBUMS from her! Living to die and I'll die to live again - 360 degrees - comprehend

Anyway, I prefer B.H. over her debut and she's def a live stormy I can't agree with you more. Beautifully Human was better than her debut because of its cohesion and the warmness of the production. The debut had this rawness and slickness that made it an enduring effort. Check me out and add me on:

Is that a Clear Channel joke or did you forget it's called Sugar Water? I don't see why a choice has to be made BUT if both were performing live on the same night, I'd go see Jill. She's just RIDICULOUS live - I love the different flavors she puts into her show, can't wait to see her again. While Beautifully Human didn't make the same impression on me as her first album, I thought it was almost as strong. It's song for song & I still spin it from time to time (the live album too, that shit never disappoints)... I dig Erykah too now, don't get me wrong - they're both the shit
