I'm unclear about the distinction. Does it mean independent label rock? Can you be indie on a major? Is there an indie sound? Am I indie?

"indie rock" and "indie rockers" can be anything from cool and laid-back to complete poseur, scenesterism. i find some people who are into that kind of music generally alright, but there is something about the nature of calling the new wave of rock "indie rock" as if it were never around BEFORE (ie. indie is nothing new) rather pretentious. i do know a lot of "indie rockers" who aren't really very much into the music, just into the SCENE.

technically, i think indie rock should mean any rock music coming from an indie label. of course, it's not that simple. i think that scruffy, kinda youthful/obtuse sound has become a style, so you can be on Geffen and be considered "indie rock".

I think the quintessential indie rock band was Pavement. Listen to one of their albums, and you'll know what the template is for indie rock.

Well at a time indie was short for independent... in a way you could call an album like The Rainbow Children or N.E.W.S "indie". However "Indie Rock" originated from the underground punk and college radio scene in the 80's.. indie rock is also known for its lo - fi production and do it yourself attitude which was supposed to be an alternative to the overproduced albums on mainstream radio. When indie labels like Subpop merged with major labels in the 90's, groups like Nirvana crossed over into the mainstream market.

Now I hear all kinds of groups calling themselves indie rock.. even the ones with a polish ready for radio sound.. im getting old.
