This is the last one I made... it's just the kind of rap that gets me open.
01 Foster Sylvers - Misdemeanor (1972) Y'know this is just a hard-ass groove from start to ending. Foster Sylvers sounds like a young MJ on this song, which I'm sure is part of its appeal. The song was remade later on "It's Funky Enough" by The DOC. It's like hiphop to me so I started this mix off with some soul from a young voice. 02 Baby Doll - You Can't Break B-Boys (1987) This is a "battle of the sexes" type joint with Baby Doll, a Detroit female emcee, finessin' a tough track produced by Ced Gee of the Ultramagnetic MC's. The sample is from "Action" by Orange Krush, which Mariah Carey used this year on her rap remix for "We Belong Together". Some real b-boy shit, from B-Boy Records. 03 Artifacts - Wrong Side Of Da Tracks (1994) 04 Kurious Jorge - I'm Kurious (1994) As a beatmaker, I just really like how these tracks are arranged. Ain't gonna bore ya with the sample info. 05 Chi Ali - Looped It (1992) Produced by the Beatnuts and fun rap by then-pubescent now-locked down Chi. ("I took a funky beat and I looped it" - Chi Ali "But your budget is a million!" - Beatnuts "Don't worry I'll recoup it" - Chi Ali) 06 Nice & Smooth - No Delayin' (1989) Really simple beats and rhymes but so much fun. This one marries P's "Starfish And Coffee" to the drums of Biz Markie's "Nobody Beats The Biz" (you can tell they didn't dig up the original drums by Lafayette Afro Rock Band). The Awesome Two produced this one, and Teddy Ted scratches a bit of Bob James "Nautilis" at the end (another rap staple). 07 Spoonie Gee - Spoonin' Rap (1981) OK This is one of my favorite old school* (*preceding Run-DMC) rap songs. I think it's Spoonie's best song. The intro is instantly recognizable. (You say'a one for the treble Two for the time A c'mon y'all let's rock the... !) 08 KRS One - Outta Here (1993) Wanted a beat by DJ Premier somewhere on this mix, and this is one of the best collaborations outside of Gang Starr. In fact, I hope they collaborate again someday. 09 Charizma & Peanut Butter Wolf - Ice Cream Truck (1992) This song was released in the Bay Area in 1992 but the album was shelved when Charizma died in 1993. The DJ went on to form Stones Throw Records and issue (for the first time) the entire LP in 2003. The drums are from "My Adidas" by RUN-DMC, so it sounds hella nostalgic. 10 Joeski Love - Pee Wees Dance (1986) One of the best damn one-hit wonders in rap. The rap is about doing a dance that makes you look like Pee Wee Herman. Hard ass drum machine and minimal synth replay of "Tequila" (the song Pee Wee danced to in Big Adventure). Also contains the oft-sampled line "and if you can't hear the music say Huh? What?" 11 Buck 65 - You Know The Science (1999) Buck 65 basically denounces rap nowadays but this song is a perfect ode to hip-hop as a religion, from graffitti, to beat collecting (Buck says "I just found another copy of Moog Indigo" which refers to the Jean Jacques Perrey album that contains "E.V.A." made famous on Gang Starr's "Just To Get A Rep"). 12 Super Lover Cee & Casanova Rud - Do The James (1987) Classic production by Paul C (rest in peace) with Honeydrippers' "Impeach The President" sounding big as can be, and James Brown "Blues And Pants" added for the break. Flava Flav used to stop PE shows and dance to this one. 13 Kirby Dominant - Saskatoon Pimpin (2002) California rapper Kirby Dominant teams up with canadian producer Factor with this ode to "the land of snow, for sho" -- Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. 14 Grand Puba - Fat Rat (1992) Great dance track employing Fonda Rae's "Over Like A Fat Rat" and one of Grand Puba's best performances. 15 Lawless Element - High (2005) Realizing I should probably throw in something from this decade I threw in an example of NOW SCHOOL beat style that is super syncopated and unquantized but still dope. Production by Madlib (act like you know). 16 Kwame - The Rhythm (1989) This is like a basic blueprint of my thought process when I'm making beats. Chopped drums, jazz sample, and some extra vocal layers added in as percussion. Produced by Hurby Luv Bug (Salt-N-Pepa, Kid-N-Play). .. [Edited 3/10/06 14:56pm]

Your thread made me think of another idea, where different people just throw random songs out there to make one big "org" compilation. Anyway, I rarely make compilations. I've only made a few in the past, but nothing recent. I do make playlists on my iPod sometimes. looking for you in the woods tonight Switch FC SW-2874-2863-4789 (Rum&Coke)
