Just been getting into Sly & The Family Stone lately... I bought their "Essential" collection... am really loving tracks such as "M'lady", "I Cannot Make It" and "Are You Ready"...
Anyone recommend me any albums?

After all I have heard, read, etc.,
"There Is A Riot Going On" and "Stand", maybe even "Fresh". I, too, have only a compilation. But these seem to be the things to get, I'll get them sooner or later.

Definitely "There is a riot going on" - although if you have the collection I have too, there are only I think 2 songs on there that are not on the collection. And get "Fresh" too! Just got to have every song from those albums.

There's A Riot Goin' On. One of the greatest funk albums of all time.
You should also get Stand which is a great album, packed full of Sly's hits. I'm not all that keen on Fresh so I suggest you get Stand and Riot first, as they are classics. [Edited 3/11/06 6:27am] It is not known why FuNkeNsteiN capitalizes his name as he does, though some speculate sunlight deficiency caused by the most pimpified white guy afro in Nordic history.

Get Stand first, a classic in every sense of the word. It's for the heart, the soul and the mind. Fantasy is reality in the world today. But I'll keep hangin in there, that is the only way.

Get "Small Talk" (1974)..AMAZING! Funky, soulful and D'angelo ripped off so much of his "vibe " from this LP. You may have to get it on E-bay because it's out of print. Also a must have is "Remember Who You Are/Back On The Right Track". These LP's were considered flops in the late (disco) 1970's but they're still funky. "Ain't But The One Way" (1981) has that good old school Sly sound also. Sly does a real good down home version of "You Really Got Me" and the 27 second jam "Sylvester" is haunting. Just Sly singing the blues by himself on the organ. And by all means, AVOID "Heard Ya Missed Me"(1976)...utter disco wannabe crap.

Agree.. Although, A Blessing In Disguise, is a pretty decent tune from that album..

Their first three albums are criminally underrated. I think I like them better than the three cliche recommendations (Stand!, Riot and Fresh; granted those three are great too but I think listening to their albums in order is the best way as you can see how they evolved).

The first three albums might be underrated, agreed. BUT Riot... One. Of. The. Greatest. Funk. Albums. Ever. Period. It is not known why FuNkeNsteiN capitalizes his name as he does, though some speculate sunlight deficiency caused by the most pimpified white guy afro in Nordic history.
