Queen fans; what are the essential albums? I have the Platinum collection but i'm looking to get a few albums.
What are the strongest start to finish. Thanks.

i don't know if it's a fan favorite, but my favorite queen album from start to finish is "jazz". it's just so much fun. "mustapha" kicks my butt.

Not really a Queen fan, but my favorite album is...
...The Game. | |

Most would say A Night At The Opera. It is a classic. From start to finish, it's perfect.
One of my personal favorites is Hot Space. It's Queen's funk album, more or less. Most people don't really consider it one of their best but I think it works. At least for me. Fantasy is reality in the world today. But I'll keep hangin in there, that is the only way.

I thought I was the only one who actually liked Hot Space Queen and Arif Mardin, what a combination of course A night at the opera is essential, also like Anx & Cin recommended get "The Game" "Jazz", those ones are home to most of my personal fave Queen tracks also the double Live album was an early favorite of mine. memories oh, and I never got any album after The Works, Radio Gaga & shit like that did it for me... still makes me shudder to this day . [Edited 3/5/06 10:37am] Vanglorious... this is protected by the red, the black, and the green. With a key... sissy!

Makes sense that Prince fans name the funkier albums though.

You're funny. Queen II is also great. It's their "prog" album. Sorry for "labeling" everything but it gives reference for folks who may be interested. Fantasy is reality in the world today. But I'll keep hangin in there, that is the only way.

You're funny. Queen II is also great. It's their "prog" album. Sorry for "labeling" everything but it gives reference for folks who may be interested. i love rock bands who go overboard with production and orchestration without getting SO prog that it sounds like a dungeons and dragons soundtrack...hence my love for all things ELO...and queen definitely fits in that category, though with some of the titles on 'queen II', i'm a little scurred...i'll give it a listen today and letcha know what i think!

I'm not very familiar with the post the Game albums.
Queen-definitely not their best, but far from bad. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone new to Queen. "Keep Yourself Alive" and "Liar" are great songs. I'd rate it right in the middle 2.5/5. Queen II-again, not their best, but not terrible. Maybe their "weirdest" album. It does feature "Seven Seas Of Rhye" the version with vocals, but if you are new to Queen I'd wait to get this one. 2.5/5 Sheer Heart Attack-confusingly this album does not contain the song of the same name, it's on News Of The World. Queen are definitely finding themselves a bit here. Features "Killer Queen" and "Stone Cold Crazy". 3/5 A Night At The Opera-I was never a huge fan of this album. I think it's a bit overrated because it includes "Bohemian Rhapsody". Not that it's bad, but I think they did better. 3.5/5 A Day At The Races-Ok. Not as good as the album that preceded it. It does have "Tie Your Mother Down" which is one of their best rockers. 3/5 News Of The World-definitely my favourite Queen album. To be fair I should say that this is the first Queen album I heard and I know it much better than the rest but this one is very consistent. Aside from the opening two tracks this has "Sheer Heart Attack" probably their heaviest song, "Spread Your Wings", maybe my favourite Queen song and "My Melancholy Blues" my favourite Queen ballad. 4/5 Jazz-another good Queen album. Nothing really jumps out at me (aside from the singles, which as usual are great) but it's very solid. 3.5/5 The Game-even though it's not my favourite, this is probably their best album. Loaded with singles, but the album tracks are great too. "Need Your Loving Tonight" is a fantastic new-wavey Queen track. 4.5/5 I'm sure many folks would disagree, but I don't think Queen ever made a masterpiece of an album. There's not one that stands as one of the all-time best, in my opinion. The more I listen to them the more I like them, but there was filler on all of their albums. You might want to try the compilation Rocks, Vol. 1. There is a bit of overlap with the Platinum Collection, but there are many of their best rock songs on there.

Cool. Like I stated, it's about as "prog" as they ever got. It's kinda cheesy but it rocks in a very unapoligetic kinda way. Fantasy is reality in the world today. But I'll keep hangin in there, that is the only way.

I love "Hot Space"! Never quite understood why this was slated so much.
"Jazz" and "The Game" also do it for me. "News Of The World" is a cracker, too. Actually, "The Works" is another good one. And then there's "A Night At The Opera"...etc.

Hence the title, "Hot Space". Fantasy is reality in the world today. But I'll keep hangin in there, that is the only way.
