A billion songs sold in two years...sounds like a winner to me. clapping music mac However, in order for it to be a billion dollars in sales, they actually would need to sell 1,010,101,011 downloads, since they are selling tracks at 99 cents. The interesting thing about this is the fact that iTunes is actually a loss leader for Apple, because most of the money is actually going back to the record labels. Apple is actually making more money from iPod sales.

A billion dollars in sales for music downloads thanks to Steve Jobs' vision, yet leave it to the record companies to try to kill this golden goose by pressuring Apple to overcharge for song downloads.

Downloads may be a loss for Apple right now, but they should catch up in time, as there is "virtually" (haha get it?) no overhead for them. No cd plastic, no manufacturing machines. With an initial investment for computer equipment (which Apple probably can get at a reasonable rate!), selling information in the form of downloads should make them tons of money (assuming the record co. allows it!)

Well, most of those songs would have been sold at a reduced price (either as an album or as a promo). Moreover a whole bunch were freebies. Apple doens't release any information about what percentage of their 'sales' are actual songs sold.

It's the record companies that make the big profit here, they get (if i'm not mistake) 93% of the sale price, while they don't have any overhead whatsover.

That's a big precentage! But it still means they've made about $70 million off of it if they had sold all those billion (though you say they didn't) at 99 cents. It's still a young business. If it's managed well, it'll make a lot more. Can't say I feel bad for them!

And you shouldn't. I largely share people's enthousiasm about iTunes, I was just warning against blindly believing Apple's hype machine.

Either my comp is really s****y or the iTunes Music Store is acting really funny tonight (it's usually like this on New Music Tuesdays -- especially when you try to sample song selections).

Thats because they spend a fortune on marketing, but actually have a tiny percentage of sales in their core market (ie not ipod).

They spend millions trying to convince others they innovate, when in fact all they do is bring existing products or services to the masses, repackaged in a white box at quadruple the price.

Is it just me.. or does the background melody sound like that song "I got a friend in jesus.. spirit in the sky"

sounds very very close

Now that you mention it, I do hear what you're alluding to, it has the melody of that Norman Greenbaum tune synthesized with electric punches. Definitely gives off an Ol' Time Revival vibe -- especially in the handclaps.
