Rhino's Girl Groups of the 60's Box Set!

http://www.rhino.com/stor...mber=74645

Oh my.

I love 60’s girls groups – totally underrated genre. It’s like great pop but with real instruments. I had been eyeing the box set “One Kiss Can Lead To Another: Girl Group Sounds Lost & Found” put out by Rhino Records for quite a while. Tonight I finally picked it up at a Sam Goody “going out of business” sale - $50.00!!! Hells yeah. I’m glad I bought it – it’s fantastic. The book is interesting, the packaging is very cool (it's shaped like a funky hat), and best of all the music ROCKS.

I dare anyone to find a R&B/pop song from today’s Top 40 that as hot as “Boys” by The Shirelles. This was the b-side to their #1 single “Will You Still Love Me?”, but I like it better than the A-side. It really just rocks - this girl was a hell of a singer. The Beatles loved the song so much they recorded a version for their debut album (which doesn’t even come close to swinging like the original.)

The sound on this box is absolutely amazing – these songs come to life like I’ve never heard them. The set focuses on the obscure stuff; lesser-known singles, b-sides, and stuff from artists that were obscure even at the time.

Everything Rhino does is top notch, and this box set proves it.

I AM LOVING THIS!

thumbs up!

Excuse me...Sam Goody is going out of business? Damn! Of all the stores unders that Sam Goody Umbrella, who is it that Suncoast is still around? They are so over priced and never have any kind of deals...At least Media Play would have some decent sales here and there.

So far I've only listened to Disc One, but i am loving every minute of it.

Besides the Shirelles track, The Chiffon's track "Nobody Knows Whats Goin' On" is really awesome... it's very different than what you normall expect a "girl group" to sound like; it's almost psycadelic. the booklet refers to it as one ofthe earlies psychadelic/pop kinda things.

And the first track - "Needle in a Haystack" by the Velvelettes... just rocks. These ladies were incredible vocalists; real feeling and emotion in their voices.

Awesome pop music!!

That description made me think of Sally Go 'Round The Roses...

...by The Jaynetts

On second thought, it sounds more spooky than psychedelic.

Interesting.... too bad that song isn't on this box. I don't see anything by The Jaynettes. I guess they couldn't put everyone on. i didn't realize there were so many girl bands in those days smile

Probably because it was a very big hit.
They seem to have picked very esoteric cuts for this comp which is good.

Yeah, i'm glad they went with the obscure. I'm sure most of this stuff was really hard, if not impossible, to find.
