I like Bebel's stuff...she's definitely continuing in the tradition of her father, Joao Gilberto, but she's also advancing it--- she's got her own style...

2f4c: Now don't go understimating your fellow orgers. I've had this album for 5 years.

Her followup released in 2004 is pretty good too.

She's been discussed a lot of times here.

These aren't newsounds to some of us, but you're definitely right that they are good sounds for all to have. Thanks for bringing her up again.

Yeah, I already saw her live last year at the Blue Note here in NYC. It was a great show.

I bet she puts on a good one. They had some good shows there last year (as if they don't every year). Me'Shell came through there with Spirit Music Jamia, I think.

I was gonna say.....definitely check out Thievery Corporation, their shit is just great!
I only like remixes of Bebel's music, done by Thievery or Kruder & Dorfmeister. Her original music is a bit too dull to me, saw her live a few years back and it almost me to sleep!

Actually, Astrud wasn't her mama, she was Joao's 1st wife who notoriously cheated on Bebel's dad so she could get it on with Stan Getz (it was a very Ingrid Bergman-Roberto Rosselini type legend in the music biz at that time)...

Bebel's mom, as most North Americans are unaware, is Joao's second wife, Brazilian music royalty MIUCHA, sister of mega-Brazilian pop star Chico Buarque, Cristina Barque, and Ana de Hollanda. She too collaborated with Getz, AC and Tom Jobim, and the usual list of heavyweights in samba and música popular brasilera from the late 60's till her last release in about 1999-2000, as both a vocalist and a composer, though her place and reputation is always overshadowed in the States by wife #1 and the whole scandalous affair with Getz ...Astrud is pretty cool in my book, but, compared to Bebel's blood relatives from Mama's side of the family....well..., wink
