If her record company did tell her to lose weight then they are crazy as hell. What the hell does her weight have to do with singing and making music?

Maybe she'll change the album title to "20 lbs." lol

Who knows if this is true or not? There are always rumors before an album is supposed to come out. Either way, Virgin has been doing a terrible job promoting Janet for over a decade, so if it is true, they have a lot of nerve. She's still one of their biggest artists.

She's a pop star and uses image to sell records. That's the way it's always been with Janet.

I think the ultimatum answers your question.

It could be. I'm sure if the record company makes any comment on this they'll deny that. Couldn't the Teena Marie law or whatever it is stop that?

Beat me to it! I agree....Virgin has dropped the ball on all of her albums except for "janet" and to a slight extent "The Velvet Rope", which rebounded with some hit singles after the non-release of "Got Til It's Gone". I think after her deal she needs to move on. BTW, I think Virgin is a decent company. They tend not to do butcher artists back catalogs with hits collections (unless I'm wrong about this).

I'd say Virgin did a bloody great job promoting the heap of shit that was the All For You album. They were the ones that organised that MTV Icon thing. It went through more singles than it's life deserved, with expensive videos to boot despite the fact that the album had stopped selling by the time of 'Son Of A Gun'. It sunk early in Europe because Janet was the only artist to have cancelled her tour post-9/11 instead of rescheduling it.

It was only Damita Jo that suffered, possibly because of the MTV ban (although that was only on US MTV).

All for You was a great track though and was a huge radio hit, which pushed the album.

It's a shame All Nite/Don't Stop wasn't the lead single of Damita Jo. It deserved to be #1. But she was suffering the backlash from the SuperBowl.
Thanks Clear Channel.

I still don't buy the Superbowl "backlash" outside the USA. Everyone laughed at the OTT reaction the right wing Republican rednecks had over that. She faced no ban on MTV or TV anywhere in Europe. She did loads of TV promotion for both singles everywhere, there were TV adverts, billboards, a DVD release. What more could have been done?

I think that if her next album doesn't sell, Virgin will cut her loose. As for the 20 lbs rumor? Well all that money that she's got, All she has to do is hire a personal trainer and watch what she eats. She'll lose the weight quickly.

what's this "thanks clear channel".... Clear Channel didn't whip Janet's titty out on stage.

she made a horrible mistake. she paid the consequences of that in the form of backlash (not to mention the album she was shilling sucked ass). Clear Channel played its part in the backlash, but let's put the blame where it belongs... on Janet herself.

They dropped the ball after three singles (BTW, all of them where hits although "Son Of A Gun" was only a modest one). The release of the video collection right after the release of the "Son Of A Gun" video, which wasn't included...pitiful (and then they released yet another incomplete video collection recently...nice!).

The DVD release was a good way of killing the album....The same way they did with...yep..."All For You"! I can't argue with what happened to either album outside of Europe, where Janet I don't think is as big as she is here, but in America, she got fucked over on her last two albums (The "All for You" fiasco was blamed on new people coming in...the same ones that hired and fired Mariah so quickly....they are gone now).

I'm confused...Are you admiting that the Republican owned Clear Channel fucked over Janet for releasing her tit, something the public didn't give a shit about? I honestly don't think the public knew about the album and the first single (they definately didn't know about "All Nite", which didn't chart). I think it's the same with "American Life", another Connie favorite.

The fact is that Janet will probably have another hit single at least this time out...Why? The rules have changed and people can buy Janet's single on the net. Fuck you, Clear Channel! If "All Nite" had been released as the first single and on the net, even Clear Channel couldn't keep it out of the top ten. Recently songs that seem to be making the top ten just by singles sales (for example, did anyone see that Disney song that was in the top ten for a week?).

Janet's weight goes up and down all the time, it doesn't matter. Personally, I think she looks just as fine when she's a bit heavier!

I guess the problem here though is that she still seems intent on chasing the teenybopper audiences and competing with the teenage pop groups. It's a shame, because Janet's core audience from the days of Control have all grown up now. IMO the last really decent album Janet did was The Velvet Rope.

the public knew that she had an album out. the controversy could have gone one of two ways, right from the get go. it could have sold her a shitload of albums or it could have demolished the whole project. it did the latter. the album also got poor reviews. let's not act like Tittygate and the Clear Channel snub were the only factors that kept it from selling.

But let's acknowledge that a Clear Channel snub can hurt any album! Now she doesn't need them!

I've always thought she should leave Virgin after her contract is up, but now it doesn't look that way since Jermaine Dupri is now the head of Virgin's urban division. Who knows? Maybe she'll get much better marketing this time around if he's handling it.

Maybe that yo-yo weight routine has caught up with JJ. Maybe it's just a lot harder to lose the weight this time.

And, wouldn't it be cool if she stayed heavy for an album?

That'd do way more for feminism, tolerance and acceptance of body image than any of her RN-era stances.

Stay heavy, Janet. Be you.

I've always wanted to ask the Janazis this, so I'll ask it here... seems as good a time/place as any..... Actually, I'd like to ask anyone that thought the Superbowl incident wasn't a big deal.

If Janet whipping her titty out at the Superbowl wasn't a big deal, then why'd she do it in the first place? She knew it was going to be a big deal. That's why she did it. It just went farther than she'd have liked. Someone should have told her that when you play with fire, you get burned.
