Songs namechecking other singers/musicians

"Hey Ninteeen" Steely Dan - Aretha Franklin

Way back when
In sixty-seven
I was the dandy
Of gamma chi
Sweet things from boston
So young and willing
Moved down to scarsdale
Where the hell am i
Hey nineteen
No we can’t dance together
No we can’t talk at all
Please take me along
When you slide on down

Hey nineteen
That’s ’retha franklin
She don’t remember
The queen of soul
It’s hard times befallen
The sole survivors
She thinks I’m crazy
But I’m just growing old

Hey nineteen
No we got nothing in common
No we can’t talk at all
Please take me along
When you slide on down

The cuervo gold
The fine columbian
Make tonight a wonderful thing

No we can’t dance together
No we can’t talk at all

good one! this also drops Bootsy, Sly & Robbie, Smokey (?), Bob Marley, Kurtis Blow.. and Bohannon Bohannon Bohannon lol

okay, here's another multi-nomination:
Zapp - "Doesen't really matter"

James Brown is in there, Sly, Prince, Rick James and a whole lotta bunch of others... it also checks on Motown, Stax, Philly, the "Minneapolis connection" etc. ...damn, I can't find those damn lyrics now!?

Richard Thompson's MADONNA'S WEDDING

Out of wedlock is my son
Two bastards now instead of one
What can publicly be done
To rectify my honour

A wedding! That'll pull me through
I'll marry husb... father number two
Get me Scotland, that'll do
Just say "It's for Madonna"

Get me a castle nice and old
Lots of armour, lots of mould
Not too shabby, not too cold
Say "It's for Madonna"

A tartan for the bride and groom
A few close friends, there ain't much room
Sting's place for the honeymoon
If we can stand the squalor

Oh, baby Rocco needs a dip
In holy water, ain't it sick
Get me a cathedral, quick
Say "It's for Madonna"

Oh let's do that Scotland thing
Whisky and a Highland Fling
Limo waiting in the wings
To whisk you where you wanna

Oh the locals think it's some big deal
They're flattered by the showbiz spiel
They thought Braveheart was for real
Upon my word of honour

We'll get Hello magazine
To photograph the happy scene
We'll make those other divas green
With envy of Madonna

'Cause you see, my dear, it's down to class
What good's talent? Tits and arse!
If your lifestyle's deeply crass
Like those would-be Madonnas

Kate Bush's Blow Away

One of the band told me last night
That music is all that he’s got in his life.
So where does it go?
Surely not with his soul.
Will all of his licks and his r’n’b

Blow away?
Blow away
Blow away

Our engineer had a different idea
From people who nearly died but survived,
Feeling no fear of leaving their bodies here,
And went to a room that was soon full of visitors.

Hello minnie, moony, vicious, vicious, buddy holly, sandy denny.
Please don’t thump me,
Don’t bump me,
Don’t dump me back there.
Please don’t thump me,
Don’t bump me,
I want to stay here.

Put out the light, then, put out the light.
Vibes in the sky invite you to dine.
Dust to dust,
Blow to blow.
Bolan and moony are heading the show tonight.

Hello minnie, moony, billie, vicious, vicious,
Buddy holly, sandy denny
.
Please don’t thump me,
Don’t bump me,
Don’t dump me back there.
Please don’t thump me,
Don’t bump me,
I want to stay here.

U2 - Angel of Harlem

Birdland on fifty-three
The street sounds like a symphony
We got John Coltrane and a love supreme
Miles, and she's got to be an angel

Lady Day got diamond eyes
She sees the truth behind the lies
Angel

Michael Jackson - Jam

First I Cooled Like A Fan
Got With Janet
Then With Guy
Now With Michael
Cause It Ain't Hard To

David Bowie - Drive in Saturday

And try to get it on like once before
When people stared in Jagger's eyes and scored
Like the video films we saw
I'm the first mammal to wear pants.

The Police- "When the World is Running Down":

Turn on my VCR,
Same one I've had for years,
James Brown on the The T.A.M.I. Show,
Same tape I've had for years...."

I sit in my old car
Same one I've had for years
Old battery's running down
It ran for years and years

Turn on the radio
The static hurts my ears
Tell me where would I go
I ain't been out in years
Turn on the stereo
It's played for years and years
An Otis Redding song
It's all I own

When the world is running down
You make the best of what's still around
When the world is running down
You make the best of what's still around

Here's one right up my alley.... razz

Beastie Boys

"The New Style"

And on the cool check in
Center stage on the mic
And we're puttin' it on wax
It's the new style

Four and three and two and one What up!
And when I'm on the mic - the suckers run (Word!)
Down with Adrock and Mike D. and you ain't
And I got more juice than Picasso got paint
Got rhymes that are rough and rhymes that are slick
I'm not surprised you're on my dick
B-E-A-S-T-I-E, what up Mike D.
Ah yeah, that's me
I got franks and pork and beans
Always bust the new routines
I get it - I got it, I know it's good
The rhymes I write - you wish you would
I'm never in training - my voice is not straining
People always biting and I'm sick of complaining
So I went into the locker room during classes
Bust into your locker and I smashed your glasses
You're from Secausus - I'm from Manhattan
You're jealous of me because your girlfriend is cattin'

There it is - kick it!!!

Father to many - married to none
And in case you're unaware I carry a gun
Stepped into the party - the place was over packed
Saw the kid that dissed my homey and shot him in the back
I had to get a beeper 'cause my phone is tapped
You better keep your mouth shut 'cause I'm fully strapped
I got money in the bank - I can still get high
That's why your girlfriend thinks that I'm so fly
I've got money and juice - twin sisters in my bed
Their father had envy so I shot him in the head
If I played guitar I'd be Jimmy Page
The girlies I like are underage
Check it!
Girls with boyfriends are the kind I like
I'll steal your honey like I stole your bike
Your father - he's jealous 'cause I'm making that green
I've got the girlie's numbers from the places I been

There it is - kick it!!!

You wanna know why - because I'm
October 31st - that is my date of birth
I got to the party and I did the Smurf
Taxing all females from coast to coast
And when I get my fill I'm chilly most
We rag-tag girlies back at the hotel
And then we all switch places when I ring the bell
I chill at White Castle 'cause it's the best
But I'm fly at Fat Burger when I way out west
K-I-N-G-A-D whammy
All the fly ladies are on my jammy
Went to the prom - wore the fly blue rental
Got six girlies in my Lincoln Continental
Met this girl at the party and she started to flirt
I told her some rhymes and she pulled up her skirt
Spent some bank - I got a high powered jumbo
Rolled up a wooly and I watched Colombo

Let me clear my throat - Kick it over here baby pop
And let all the fly skimmies, feel the beat...mmm drop

Coolin' on the corner on a hot summers day
Just me, my posse and M.C.A.
A lot of beer - a lot of girls - and a lot of cursing
Twenty-two automatic on my person
Got my hand in my pocket and my finger's on the trigger
My posse's gettin' big - and my posse's gettin' bigger
Some voices got treble - some voices got bass
We got the kind of voices that are in your face
Like the bun to the burger - like the burger to the bun
Like the cherry to the apple - to the peach to the plum
I'm the king of the Ave. - and I'm the king of the block
I'm M.C.A. - and I'm the King Adrock
I'm Mike D. - I got all the fly juice
On the checkin' at the party on the forty deuce
Walking down the block with the fresh fly threads
Beastie Boys fly the biggest heads

biggrin

Nik Kershaw - Radio Musicola:

Black Vinyl man with black plasticised imagination,
more fodder for the new lost generation,
I got a question to send you to the nearest closet,
Why can't you let us do it like JONI does it,
There you go again, giving it your very best,
trying so hard to make it sound like all the rest,
and as your factory sanctifies your wooden soul,
you gave us T.V. dinners, now it's T.V. rock 'n' roll,

we're growing up
we're growing up
to Radio Musicola

I got political inclinations to announce,
But no way, if it doesn't scan with your accounts,
I got some spiritual ideology for you,
I know it's gotta correspond with the corporation view,

we're growing up
we're growing up
to Radio Musicola

You can find it in the streets,
you can find it in the elevators,
you can find it where the ladies wash their hands
it emanates from little
boxes on the wall and it'll
soon be coming in disposable tin cans...

My soul shows art to me, but dollars says my radio,
wall street liquid lunches showing us the way to go
Why tolerate this numismatical polity?

There isn't any other way -- there isn't any other way, more's the pity...

we're growing up
we're growing up
to radio musicola

we're growing up
we're growing up
to radio musicola

we're growing up
we're growing up
to radio musicola

NorthernLad

I believe there is a line in "True" by Spandau Ballet, "listening to Marvin all night long". Referencing Marvin Gaye, I assume.

Eurythmics' "Shame" mentions "the Beatles and the Stones"

Prince of course mentions Joni Mitchell in "Ballad of Dorothy Parker"

Nirvana mentions Leonard Cohen in "Pennyroyal Tea"

Tori Amos mentions the song "When Doves Cry" in "Wednesday" and Jimi Hendrix in "Mary".

Neil Young mentions Bob Dylan in "Bandit"; and of course David Bowie has "Song for Bob Dylan"

What's that song called... "You Get What You Give", I believe, by the New Radicals...it mentions Courtney Love, Beck, Marilyn Manson and Hanson, as i recall.

Kate Bush mentions Elvis in "King of the Mountain".

Lucinda Williams mentions ZZ Top in "Metal Firecracker" and Howlin' Wolf in "Lake Charles"

those are a few off the top of my head.

I thought the rap break-down in Family Stand's "Plantation Radio" was hilarious, especially for those that remember the musical climate of the late 80's/early 90's...

"....Maybe with a Robert Palmer remake,
Maybe that's what it takes for one o'my songs to break,
or maybe I can take that old Martha Wash jam,
so I could sample the voice, and I could be the man,
and get some little skinny model to lip-sync? hold on a second, let me think..,

Or maybe I'll be like Milli Vanilli, get a Grammy, have to give it back,
and do commercials for "Care -Free"...."

Salt-N-Pepa:

From Shoop:

"Like Prince said, you're a sexy mutha [BLEEP]! (referencing Prince's SexyMF)

From Whattaman:

"And yes, it's me that he's always choosin'. With him I'm never losin', and he knows that my name is not Susan" (referencing Whitney Houston's "My Name Is Not Susan".

Mariah Carey

In "We Belong Together" she references 2 songs:

"Bobby Womack’s on the radio, winging to me “If You Think You’re Lonely Now”

then a few lines later:

"And then I hear Babyface
“I Only Think Of You” and it’s breakin’ my heart" (referencing the songs "Two Occassions" which I think was by The Deele, the group Babyface was in pre-solo career.

Doesn't Prince namechck a whole lotta folks in Musicology?

Another Mariah song with 2 song-checks:

From "Breakdown"

Do you cling to your pride and sing "I will survive"
Do you lash out and say: "How dare you leave this way

The 2nd one is poetic license, referencing "Don't Leave Me This Way" by Thelma Houston. Cute combination since both that and Gloria Gaynor's I will Surive are of the same era and genre.
