I doubt that they would have even considered Mariah to open the show. Honestly, she doesn't have the ability to hook in viewers.
I heard they were originally considering Kanye to open.

Madonna can do whatever she wants. So she said either I open the show or I don't perform...and they went with her.
If you check Google statistics, Madonna WAY trumps Mariah for like 90 million searches vs. 20 million (yes I am sick and bored). So there is more public interest in Madonna, despite all the Wal Mart shoppers and lambs who re-buy Mimi and radios who've been payola-ed up the ass. I'll leave it alone babe...just be me

Yeah, but she is over exposed....Madonna does timely performances....Mariah shows up to the drop of a hat. It's not really bad mouthing Mariah....What she does works for her (she does outsell Madonna) but what Madonna does works for her.

Madonna is a much better live entertainer than Mariah You CANNOT use the name of God, or religion, to justify acts of violence, to hurt, to hate, to discriminate- Madonna

Payola sure didn't help Pearlnecklace. Mariah still was the winner w/ the buying public in the U.S.. Madonna can keep her prestigous Google title though.

Mariah isn't one 100th the performer that Madonna is. That's why Madonna will always garner more attention for her performances. Feel free to join in the Prince Album Poll 2018! Let'a celebrate his legacy by counting down the most beloved Prince albums, as decided by you!

well i said this somewhere before so ill say it again, this whole madonna and goriallz opening just sounds like a bad idea. I dont think in a live performance
the combo of a person and cartoon characters is going to work. It just sounds corny. The Most Important Thing In Life Is Sincerity....Once You Can Fake That, You Can Fake Anything.

There's no way the organisers would want to open the show with a ballad for gods sakes, although knowing mariah, she's perform half ballad half dreadfully souped up dance version of the ballad.
The organisers have gone with the act they know will be the most entertaining, why would whoevers sold the most in the US be the test as to who should open the show? Whats so special or unique about seeing Mariah perform We Belong Together for the 2000th time.

Since when do they hand out performance spots based on Grammy wins? Does that mean the next Grammy show that Beyonce should open over Madonna? She has more Grammys.

I didn't say that they hand out performances based on Grammy wins.I'm just pointing out that,Madonna has alot of clout with the Grammy folks in charge. If she says SHE wants to open the show,do you seriously think they would turn her down? In favor of Mariah Carey?! Come on now... . [Edited 2/8/06 5:06am]

Mariah was the story of the year what did Madonna do?

It's not like she doesn't have the album sales to back up the radio airplay. Somebody is wanting to hear Mariah's music. I love how it has to be payola now that her songs were hits. But, w/ Pearlnecklace her stuff was just flopping. IF this was Madonna nobody would be yelling payola. But, because her stuff is flopping it's some Madonna age conspiracy. It's not like her first single just took off. Radio was cautious and cautious still w/ We Belong Together. IF it was payola and bad call out research. They'd just spin her mess at night time to garner some spins, and collect money. Mariah did good on call out research and Madonna didn't it.

Well I think of it this way....Madonna managed to hit the Top Ten mostly from sales...I think that's a more impressive feat than taking the number one spot based mostly on radio play, which is fishy at best. There is no way to prove it's payola, but it certaintly got paid too much, along with it's follow ups.
