"Humpin'" by The Gap Band

1980 was a great year for funk and "Humpin'" by The Gap Band was one of the greats. Anybody feeling this one?

You know how people like to do these days....especially radio. They like to pick two or three songs, wear them out, and forget about the rest.

I like this one, and it used to play all the time at my local radio station. My favorite songs by Gap Band are Party Train and Early In the morning.

Put ya back down sucka and raise your rump into a vicious hump....

Imagine my delight when I got to see them do this live last summer. This is my favorite Gap Band song.

I love "The 12 Inch Collection". My favorite is the sirens in "You Dropped A Bomb On Me".

It's strange that the Gap band were pretty much the chameleons of the Funk back then. Their first record had them copying EWF unapolegetically, the second record was a total lift of P-Funk, ("oops upside your head" = "the bomb") and then they came into their own on the third record with Humpin, Burn Rubber, and the other stuff, and then, BAM, they started copying their OWN damn hits, where Early in the Morning was just a ripoff of Burn Rubber, and then Party Train was a ripoff of Early In The Morning.

And THEN they did "You Dropped a Bomb On Me" and somehow that was the end of their originality.

Odd career, that band.

i think u got it backward. by that 3rd album u had people bitin THEIR sound like Carl Carlton's "Bad Mamma Jamma" that's basically "Burn Rubber" in the key of F....the only familiar thread in their other songs was the 1-2-3-4/1-2-3-4 drum countoff.....

For me this is a very close second after Burn Rubber.

In their heyday, the Gap Band was the baddest band on the planet.

It's on "Gap Band III". If you can't find that one, it's also on "The 12 Inch Collection" (even though the version is the same as the album version).

I've seen these guys a couple of times in concert,
and "Outstanding" always got the biggest audience response.
