Here's another Steely Dan contribution....

Everything You Did

Where did the bastard run
Is he still around
Now you gotta tell me everything you did baby
I'm gonna get a gun
Shoot the lover down
Are you gonna tell me everything you did baby
Traces are everywhere
In our happy home
Now you better tell me everything you did baby
I jumped out of my easy chair
It was not my own
Now I want to hear about everything you did baby

chorus:
I never knew you
You were a roller skater
You gonna show me later
Turn up the Eagles the neighbors are listening

You know how people talk
I wonder what they say
I think you better tell me everything you did baby

Chorus:
I never knew you
You were a roller skater
You gonna show me later

You never came to me
When you were so inclined
Yes you could have told me everything you did baby
I know where baby's at
I know your filthy mind
Now you're gonna do me everything you did baby

The Animals It's All Meat

The sound of Muddy Waters and the voice of Jimmy Reed
When Ray Charles moans
It's all meat on that same bone
It's all meat on just one bone

When Miles Davis blows his horn,
When Ravi Shankar plays
It's all down home
But it's all meat on the same bone
It's all meat on just one bone

When Erkel Darbies walks,
When Eric Clapton talks
There's only one place it can come from
And it's all meat on the same bone
All meat, same bone,
Do it!

Don't you listen to none of them jive hip squares
Try to tell you where the blues is from
'Cause the blues is from the whole wide world
Deep within the souls of men.

When Muhammad Ali gets mad
When an Irishman drinks
It's all for a woman
It's all for his home
It's all meat on the same bone
It's all meat, same bone
It's all meat, same bone
Same bone, same thing
It's all soul, It's all meat…

The song is basically a huge soundbite of a guy reading a list of popular artists. I'm thinking this soundbite was recorded sometime in 1984 because a lot of the artists he named had hits that year.

And he also calls David Bowie: "David Boo-ey." lol

Frustration by Soft Cell has a few

Frustration (x4)
I'm so tired of endless art
Love stories
I'm beginning to not give a damn
I wish I could reach right out for the untouchable
Film starring Bruce, John Wayne, Elvis Presley
Experiment with cocaine, LSD and set a bad bad example
Live a little, run a harem, be a tiger
Meet Bo Derek and be her Tarzan
Reach, reach out out
Live, live, live
Die, die, die
I, I, I, I wanna die...

Awesomeness! In my opinion, "Tainted Love" is way over-played. I'd much rather here some of their other stuff. "Sex Dwarf" always gets me dancing.

some guy wrote this song:

Who will b a guest in Ur tent?
Certainly not the ones who don't wanna repent
And keep giving guns 2 the poorest of our nation's sons
Who is gonna call U by name?
With no confusion, trinity or preacher's vain?
Who says that everytime
and opens up the eyes of the blind?
Who will b the 1 in his bed?
certainly not the 1's who put thorns on his head
and wished him dead while they took his daily bread.
Which 1 is of value to U?
The 1 depleting the oil supply
or the One that renews it
And keeps the peace...
Like the groove in Sade's sweetest taboo.
Who will b a guest in Ur tent?
R U gonna b happy with how Ur life has been spent?
Did u have open arms 4 each and everybody U met
Or did U let them die in the rain? Endless war, Poverty or hurricane...
It's time 4 another groove...
Like Sade's Sweetest Taboo.
you look better on your facebook page than you do in person hmph!

Hah, to be honest usually when songwriters have to namecheck other artists they've just ran out of lyrical ideas. Of course there are exceptions to the rule, you can for instance mention Joni Mitchell in a jazz-electro song of yours, but namechecking both D'Angelo and ?uestlove definitely is not cool. Neither is mentioning Macy and Common eligible for consideration for proper coolness.

hmmm

Strangely enough. This seems to be one of those rare things, that "it's a white thing, they wouldn't understand" instead of "it's a black thing, they wouldn't understand". Apparently my intuition tells me name-checking black folks in a song is a totally uncool thing to do these days. Maybe Puff Daddy killed it, I don't know. Next thing I'm gonna write a new tune that mentions Ted Nugent, now that's art.
