What kind of fan are you?

You know how you have those people who can spew out 50 million facts about their favorite artist and then others who've been fans of the same artist for years, but basically just like the music and could careless about the artist's personal life and little trivia facts. Well....which are you? smile

I used to be the kind that needed to know every little bit about my favorites. The problem now is that I listen to so many different performers and genres that I don't have the time to get into anything more than their music. The older I get, the less interested I am in the private lives of folks.

some of them yes, some of them no. i think the artists i admire most are the ones i've followed for years, and whose personal exploits are the most charming and/or impressive.

and then there's prince. lol

ok, i razz, but the man's never been a celebrity trainwreck, unless he's gone out on a limb to make a point. and i have to admit, i admire him for his crazy stunts.

I love hearing about the private lives of my favorite artists, or even artists I don't like, as long something interesting has happened in their lives such as drug use, permiscuous sex, homosexuality, bisexuality, feuds with band members, feuds with other artists, etc.

I could care less about hearing personal information about artists who live dull "normal" lives. I don't care how many kids they have, what their favorite food is, if they have any pets, who their parents and siblings are. In other words, if it ain't dirt, I ain't interested.

Yeah, I've owned it in various home media formats. lol You didn't recognize her by the hair she so wildly thrashed around? I think she may have even done the splits once or twice.

I select a couple special ones and study them carefully from afar. I don't seek out information, but absorb it as it comes near and memorize it. I'm looking for role models who I can learn from.

I think it's interesting to learn about personal facts about my favorite groups/singers, but it's only secondary to me. I think what's most important is the music.

SenseOfDoubt

I have a plate in front of me with miniature-true-to-life copies of my favourite bands/artists. Sometimes a new one joins the "ring of the damned" (Joy Division was the last one), some are pretty close to the edge, but hardly one falls ever completely off. Some are more centered (P, Zappa, MD, Bowie, Kraftwerk), some are a step behind etc. The plate spins, e.g sometimes I fell out of the blue into a complete Bowie-madness, while e.g. Curtis Mayfield is put to the back.

I'm not that much interested in their personal lifes or habits, but I like to explore their surroundings (e.g. Minneapolis in the 80s, etc.), their recording-devices (synths they used etc.), accomplished musicians, etc. Frank Zappa is a perfect subject to research with tons of things you might want to know, in that case wink And I like trivia a lot.

You know, as far as myself, my intent was never to become one of the "illest Janet fans there ever was," it kinda-sorta just crept up on me. All I know is, when I look back, my fandom just grew because I honestly appreciated the music that was being made by her. It wasn't about image or videos. From a very young age, I just was fixated with the music. I wasn't out to impress, compete with or wow anyone.

As far as me knowing facts about my fave artists, well, if someone hangs out at fan message boards all the time and reads, reads, reads, then you'll just casually pick up a lot of anecdotal stuff.

If an album blows me away, I tend to call them "records" or "projects" (it just sounds richer to me). When that's the case, I want to know who helped record, the whole recording process, what year, etc. And if I find out a producer recorded X, Y or Z song, I'll research to find out what other material the guy made for another artist.

But even I listen to a ton of artists whose records I *love*, but am not dying to meet or even know about.
