Patti Smith- Horses

God, what a wonderful album!

I picked this album up last year and was floored completely with Patti's ability to succeed equally on a musical and poetic level. These songs are scarily well-written and passionate. John Cale was at least partially responsible for so many wonderful albums in the 70s!

What are your favorites?

The ones that grip me most are:

"Land" (the blood and guts of the record)
"Birdland" (the most complete story)
"Gloria" (what a great opening song, complete with one of the best opening lines in history!)
"Free Money" (I can't put my finger on exactly what it is that I love so much about this song. Maybe it's the piano, but it just sends me.)

Also love the Tom Verlaine sound of "Break It Up". Such a great prep for Marquee Moon.

I haven't listened to any of her other albums yet, although I have Easter. Horses casts such an enormous shadow that I'm scared to be let down! What other Patti albums are worth investigating?
Feel free to join in the Prince Album Poll 2018! Let'a celebrate his legacy by counting down the most beloved Prince albums, as decided by you!

This is truly an amazing album....packs so much punch. The first line of 'Gloria' is classic...I find myself singing that in my head alot. You should check out the Deluxe Edition that was recently released for the albums 30h Anniversary (It was released the year I was born!) It has a live show that is pretty much the same sequence as the album.

You should get LAND her 'hits' collection...lots of great tracks plus her version of 'When Does Cry' and 'People Have The Power'.

Her last album 'Trampin' is also really good. Kind of hark back to those days.

peace

The studio track is weak when compared to the live bootleg versions which are amazing and haunting.

JANFAN4L

Haven't checked out this album.

But I love the songs from the Radio Ethiopia album, especially "Ask The Angels." That was my personal theme a few months ago. Really helped me deal with some difficult issues.
