What's real Hip-Hop?

I'm not an hip-hop afficionado, but what can we consider real hip-hop. The core of all the movement?

Please enlighten me!

Wow. Many of us current and former hip-hop "heads" like myself dog out hip-hop so much but we never answer that question.

It's a hard question to answer because it's subjective based on our different perspectives, influences and exposure to artists.

But in my mind, the hallmarks of "real" hip-hop are:

- Great beats
- creative, outstanding lyricism
- a clear or compelling message
- confidence
- pride
- strength
- uniqueness
- the ability to connect with the audience

The amounts of each vary from artist to artist. This is why I'd consider, De La Soul and old-school Ice-T "real" hip-hop.

"Real" hip-hop doesn't have to be perfect, or virtuous. In fact, some of my favorite artists are huge egomaniacs (see Kanye West) and a few I consider to be hypocrites (Brand Nubian, etc.).

The disease of Hit-Pop lacks all of these except confidence. It's not unique. It's not marked by great MCing or great beats. It simply copies the best hip-hop records of the past, drains them of context and hypes stereotypes.

Guru came to my neighborhood teen center when I was 16 to talk to us about violence, drugs, gangs, etc. He also did some a cappella freestyle. Such a charismatic, down-to-earth dude. He's so normal considering that he's an international superstar who's worked with everyone from U.S. hip-hop greats to prominent French jazz musicians.

Well, one can argue that that was real hip hop for its period, so yes, you are correct.

Real hiphop is artists that are not 1-dimensional, and are capable of bringing out your emotions ie:

Tupac
Nas
DMX (Slippin' still makes me cry)
Jay-Z
Bone Thugs N Harmony
Jin

Uh...Bone and Chin? I don't think so. Chin hasn't had enough under his belt to make ANY list and Bone Thugs, like DasFX ,was a gimmick...and their shit was pretty weak overall.

Jin is the illest in the game right now, no commercial success but his new album is the most "real" hiphop in years. Check it out, it's called "Jin presents : The Emcee's Propa?Ganda"

Bone were ill, the flow was original and sick. Tha Crossroads, Thug Luv, Notorious Thugs, For The Love Of $, Thuggish Ruggish Bone, 1st of the month, those are all hiphop classcs. Bizzy Bone is the only rapper to ever flow next to Pac, Big, and Eazy and outshine them all. Sick as hell.
