The Jam - All Mod Cons 1978

I MUCH prefer Beat Surrender. NME just being ridiculously snobby as usual coupled with the just plain ridiculous with some of their positions and overrating of newer albums.

I know these lists generally mean nothing and taste in music is completely subjective, but I'm a bit shocked that George Harrison's All Things Must Pass is so far down that list. Elastica placed higher than he did for goodness' sake!

Oh God, I used to like Elastica. So many one album wonders in the mid 90s.

and it has destroyed all UK debut sales records, by far. I agree, however, that the ranking is stretch.

Wasn't Beat Surrender a single, not an album?

I think All Mod Cons, Setting Sons and Sound Affects all deserve a place on the list but if I had to pick one it would probably be Setting Sons.

What I've come to realize is... if you can just ignore the rankings and choose for yourself, lists like these can be a good resource for music to check out.

I'm sure their all great albums, ykno?

One of my favorite lists was from The Source around 1998, and it had the top 100 rap albums, and it wasn't ranked, it was alphabetical.

Just because a small sample of staff happened to hear and like the same album... up it goes in rank.

Sorta like Moonpie's best of orgs 2005 list, where there's only one vote because only Anxiety piped up about a certain title.

You gotta wonder about putting Oasis above the Beatles. Why not the Rutles? Cee's got a good point, though, if you ignore the numbers, it's not a bad list.

But Sgt. Pepper is just too obvious for the top 100? Silly.

For a country with more tradition & history than America, they give more weight to recent stuff than American lists would. Rolling Stone would pick the standbys--Elvis, Beatles, Zeppelin, Jimi, Etc.

hmmm

Screamadelica should be higher.

Blur's Parklife should be on there.

The Charlatans' self-titled should be on there.

The fact that they're above any Beatles album is pretty telling.
