Alexander O'Neal - I'm in need of Minneapolis funk Yesterday I decided that I had to get some more Minneapolis stuff. I love that sound so very much... can't express it. Actually I was listening to DMRS, Something In The Water and Automatic in an endless loop.
So I came across Alexander O'Neals debut from 1985, and ordered it. (They did not have "Hearsay", which I will buy, too). Not exactly funky, but as I believe very good stuff anyway. And to round everything up, of course I had to pick up Sheilas 1600 Romance (grr, again, The Glamorous Life's delivery time was waaay too long) and Chakas "I Feel For You". Hopefully I get this albums on Tuesday or Wednesday. I hope I like that albums (but I am sure I'll do). Then I was searching for Rick James - "Street Songs" were availabe in a 2disc deluxe Edition... for nearly 30 euros. Okay, that was too much for the moment. Are Cameo albums available on CD (esp. the older works)? I'm curious and was damn near to order a 2disc sampler ("Gold", that is the same as "Anthology"). But I dropped it for the moment. ----- Please, give me some hints about early 80s funk/soul/r&b (esp. from Minneapolis). All I do know is the Time... [Edited 2/5/06 13:27pm] | |

With Hearsay you get Fake (my fave of his) and Criticize if you're looking for the funk.

cameo-she's strange/alligator woman/single life/word up the bar kays-propositions mtume-juicy fruit/you, me, and he p funk allstars-urban dancefloor guerillas jesse johnson-greatest hits (if u cant find his lps) ready for the world rick james-cold booded mary jane girls club nouveau-love,life,and pain the deele-material thangz/eyes of a stranger sos band-just the way you like it midnight star-no parking/headlines/planetary invasion janet jackson-control ..i know i am drawing a blank on the rest but this is a good start minor keys and drugs don't make a rollerskate jam | |

Try any song from the first 2 or 3 discs here for a good roundup of Mpls funk:
As for Alexander O'Neal, his first album, Hearsay (as tA's already suggested) and All True Man each have some funky cuts on them. The Yoke from the latter album is a pretty good example of Jam/Lewis Mpls funk. | |

Aye there's the rub matey. But don't worry. There's always a way to audition before committing the cash.
