BRITNEY SPEARS FANS...CAN THEY SEE??????????

Can Britney Spears and NSYNC fans see that they are marketing tools? Do they already know this and don't care that they are marketing tools? Would they be successful with their music alone without the marketing machine? Do Britney and NSYNC really care about music like most music legends?

on the current state of pop music and pop culture in general, I found this at http://www.dischord.co.uk/

It's become a truism to state that youth culture in all its forms (music, fashion, clubbing, etc) is becoming increasingly important to the mainstream mass-media. Strangely enough, though, this fascination with youth culture comes at a time when teenage rebellion as we've known it is all but over.

With newspapers and TV either unwilling or unable to get to grips with the dire political, economic and environmental situations facing the planet youth culture provides some welcome light relief, a diverting sideshow that fills column inches and plugs gaps in programme schedules.
This has now reached a level where pop culture is given as much space as current affairs.

The age of the underground, innovative, mass teenage cults when whole generations embraced certain distinctive styles seems to be gone. Instead we are left with a lumpen, nebulous 'scene' based loosely around 'dance music', while on the periphery are dozens of both new and revived tiny groupings. With the floodlight glare of the media hungrily focussed on pop culture, everyone is supposedly 'hip' these days which means of course that 'hip' no longer has any valid meaning. In this brave new world of instant cultural awareness you can be a 'snowboarder', a 'neo-new romantic', a 'neo-mod', a 'goth' or a 'gay skinhead' or into any of a dozen or so musical genres and sub-genres. If you want to be 'into' any particular scene, you have myriad style and music magazines the supposedly 'quality' press and several youth-orientated TV programmes to refer to so you can chose what, or who, you would like to be that month. So what's gone wrong? Up till the late 70s, youth cults developed at their own pace (away from the media glare) and then burst onto an unsuspecting mainstream world.

Now even the smallest sub-sect is carefully reported on, marketed for all it's worth, given its fifteen minutes of fame and then absorbed into the mainstream.

Ironically then, as youth culture becomes more and more watered-down and less relevant, so it becomes more newsworthy to the mass-media and of more commercial interest to manufacturers, promoters, record companies and the like.

In the last 20 years this has seen vacuous movements generating whole industries of money makers, experts, hype-merchants and hangers-on, all dedicated to keeping their golden goose alive and laying.

And nowhere will you see this better than in the 'dance music scene' Rebellion - or an image of rebellion - is vital for such a product, which is why almost everyone involved in dance music uses emotive phrases such as 'sound of the underground' or 'the real hard-core' when they are in fact referring to a scene that has as much subversive potential as elevator music. It's bad enough that modern corporate product is elevated to the level of ersatz cult, but far worse are the horrible distortions applied to youth cultures of the past.arrow

I think both Britney and NSYNC are very cool artists and excellent musicians. Did you ever hear Britney perform "Oops I did it again" on the electric triangle? It was the most spectaculair performance I've ever witnessed. Nothing Prince ever did can compare to this act of sheer brilliance!

And do you remember the MTV Awards Show last year, where the NSYNC boys attached tubas, trumpets and saxophones to their asses and farted their greatest hits? Now THAT was really spectacular! I don't see Prince farting When Doves Cry with a tuba attached to his ass, hell no!
RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

The thing is that there have been marketing tools and fake acts for a long time. The Monkees weren't really a pop band. They were actors who were hired to play a band on TV. They couldn't really play their instruments and only one of the guys could sing.
I think the Monkees in the 1960s invented the idea of the Phony Baloney Pop Stars and every generation just has more phonies.

i was reading something about that yesterday.
basically the britney fans think in this manner:
1. britney is putting out good music.
2.britney is making A LOT of money.
3. britney has lasted, especially for someone so young.

marketing tool or not, the fans gets what they want.

and their type of songs are only made for dance. or some love ballad remixed into dance.

Britney has two types of fans: the 13 yr old teeny bopper who couldn't tell a Disney Soundtrack from Prince's 'Erotic City' AND the pervert fanbase(fess up all you perv's, you've thought about it).

And OH YEAH we can see...a fine little rump ripe for the pluckin', perky little chi chi's, and damn, she can dance like a stripper in heat.

Any other questions?
(BTW, i dont buy her crap albums, nor her posters, 'but i like to watch') wink

U MUST BE A MORON.
WHERE DID I SAY I THOUGHT HER MUSIC WAS GOOD?
I SAID THAT I WAS READING IT SOMEWHERE.
WANT ME TO GIVE YOU THE LINK?
I AM NOT A FAN OF HERS NOR OF MADONNA, BUT THOSE FORUMS ARE THE ONES THAT HAVE SOME HITS. SO I JUST READ THEM.

WHAT I POSTED IS THE OPINION OF THE BRITNEY FANS WHEN THEY WERE ASKED A SIMILAR QUESTION ABOUT HER BEING USED AS A MARKETING TOOL.

BRITNEY MAKES GOOD MUSIC. BUT NOT IN THE ARTISTIC SENSE. SHE MAKES MUSIC THAT IS LISTENABLE AND ENJOYABLE. I CAN'T SAY THE SAME BY THE SINLGES PRINCE HAS PUT OUT. BUT HE DOES SUCEED ARTISTICALLY.

they succeed at being very marketable. but for how long?

prince and his groupies were not able or were not marketed correctly.

about britney...she is not hot. why do girls want to be like her in terms of looks? if they want to be skinny, they should too tour all over the world, get an exercise instructor, nutrionist,make-up artist, etc. i don't see how she is hot. she looked cute in her first 3 videos. but that's it.

I think these two are smart to allow
themselves to be used as marketing
tools. How else could they have made
any money? Now they should definitely
invest wisely. The ride is almost over.

Prince holds the record for most consecutive years with a top 10 single (The Most Beautiful Girl In the World being the last of the string). He did quite well at being marketed until he started sabotaging the marketing efforts. Now he's doing some of the best music of his career and nobody knows about it.

I have a 9-year-old myself and she loves Brittany...and while Brittany is obviously junk to an educated mind, young people need simple things they can understand and emulate. I don't really have a problem with it.

What I do have a problem with is that the real art seems to be lost in the shuffle...that Brittany might win a grammy...that the media, run by grown-ups, would be ignorant enough to confuse children's candy with art. That bothers me.

Speaking to older children, say those of about the age of 22, just graduating from college, I find that they are appalingly ignorant about the way things really are; they are extremely gullible and the media just amplifies their stupidity with more stupidity...so in a way Brittany does rub me the wrong way...but it's not Brittany's fault really, dig?
Fear is the mind-killer.
