Hey,I like Cheap Trick too! My older sister was a huge fan back in the day,so I was exposed to their music thru her.Did you ever check out their 'Live at Budokan' album? The live versions of "I Want You To Want Me","Ain't That A Shame" and "Need Your Love" kick ASS!!!

lots of Finnish bands, no use to mention here, i guess

Is there anything beyond "The Crash"? Oh, and Barcode Brothers, Swipe Me, was cool - but that's Swedish or Norwegian, not Finnish - very different!!

Anxiety

No particular order, of course, and constantly subject to change...

1. Prince, SOTT
2. David Bowie, Low
3. Bauhaus, The Sky's Gone Out
4. Eurythmics, Savage
5. Kate Bush, Hounds of Love
6. Radiohead, OK Computer
7. Laurie Anderson, Home Of The Brave
8. Princess Superstar, Strictly Platinum
9. Sonic Youth, Goo
10.Swans, The Burning World

I know I'm leaving out so many more gems I can't live without, but those are my first choices...

The live version of 'I Want You To Want Me' has got to be one of the very best rock n roll songs of all time!! I'm not even kidding!!!

A great clip if you can catch it is Trick doing 'Ain't That A Shame' at the American Music Awards, 1980. There's been no other band like them...

Pink Martini--Sympathique
Rufus Wainwright--Poses
Mazzy Star--She Hangs Brightly
Tori Amos--Little Earthquakes
Sinead O'Connor--The Lion and the Cobra
Prince--Parade
Prince--1999
Abba--Gold
Depeche Mode--Black Celebration or Music for the Masses
New Order--Substance

You like Mazzy Star... hhmmm, interesting. If Miss Sandoval does it for you, you may get something from the more mainstream Swans albums, stuff like Burning World (hopefully soon to be rereleased), Great Annihilator (no no! very secret!!) or Soundtracks for the Blind. Gira's doomed love for Jarboe is one of the great passions of recent music (again, IMO).

Well, I've enjoyed this, even if no one else has smile

Thanks for the heads-up with the Swans. I'm a mazzy freak so I'm looking for anything like that. thanks!

Be careful Rudy! Swans is definitely not for everyone. We could perhaps think about doing a CD swap. Org note me if you're interested. But definitely try before you buy (and if you buy, the best place is main Swan dude M. Gira's own site, www.younggodrecords.com smile

you were so right on with this. I tried to download a song ('sex, blood, something?') and I couldn't handle it. I will try the link you gave - thanks! it doesn't sound like the swans are the band for me though.

any other ideas for ethereal/drugged-out female vocal groups, ala mazzy star? bueller? anyone? I guess I'm thinking the 60's folky/feedback vibe. one hope sandoval project every 4 years just isn't enough...

No, nothing comes immediately to mind. Certainly Cocteau Twins could almost fit, but with them you get no feedback. If you don't know it "Heaven or Las Vegas" is almost certainly worth getting. You could always form a group and make your own... smile (you could do a little more digging with Swans - the trouble with them is that some early tracks sound like they were broadcast live from HELL, others are quite gentle and melodic. Gira however is eternally on the verge of suicide... approach with caution).
