Best Madonna albums 1998-present

Here's my order:

1. Ray of Light
2. Confessions on A Dance Floor
3. Music
4. American Life

Ray of Light, to me, is unbeatable. Music could have gotten second had it not been a mishmash of dance and folktronica. Had she stuck to making a hard dance album, it could have gone second. As for Confessions, I really liked it, as it's a return to dance music, not to mention her most consistant album in years. American Life was good, though it's a bit too avant guarde(in Madonna terms anyway) for me.

I feel like I must salvage that Music album, simply for the song "Don't Tell Me" which I think is one of the decade's finest, daring singles from any artist. But the rest of the album I wasn't feeling as much as her other albums.

Ray Of Light

American Life

They are all pretty close. "Confessions" is very accessable, easy to listen to and there aren't any huge dogs (nothing that amazing, either, though). It's a very good, even album. I dug "Music" for a long time, then it got away from me then I dug it again. I was kind of shocked by "Ray Of Light" at first but got it. My opinion on "American Life" never changed. A few really great songs, a few Ok songs and the rest are clunkers.

Could Confessions really be that good compared to Ray of Light?

I'm feeling a shift in the paradigm.

COMPLETELY agree with your ratings. thats how i rate them too.

i dont understand why some people dont like music but love american life. it confuses me. they have the same kind of sound except music actually has catchy songs with good production. the only song i can say that about on american life is die another day, but that wasnt even meant to be on the album.

I've come to the conclusion that while I do like all of the "techno-era" Madonna albums, my favorites are from '89 to '94. Maybe it's just nostalgia, but you really can't fuck with Like a Prayer, Erotica, or Bedtime Stories.

what would you guys like Madonna to do next?

A rock album?

A pop album (no more electronica)?

An R&B album?

I don't know that Madonna could pull off a real "rock" album, so I'm gonna vote no on that one. I think American Life (and the Headclnr remix) is as close as we'll get.

Pop-Madonna is always excellent. I also wouldn't mind an R&B album if it's more along the lines of Bedtime Stories and not inspired by the dreck that is considered modern R&B.

No! No! No! mad

I like her doing European-styled technopop, working mostly with unknown producers (Mirwais and Stuart Price aren't exactly household names).Today's R&B music is creatively dead, imo.

There are some good things going on. I think Gwen tapped most of the worthy U.S. talent. But she could do something extremely stripped down and soulful. I think more than the style of music, I would like to see her do an entire album with a real band. All the songs could be different as far as I'm concerned. Maybe along the lines of a more upbeat Sade.

I wouldn't mind if she worked with Jamiroquai. They have a cool, retro R&B/disco sound that would suit Madonna just perfectly.Remember those guys called JuniorSenior? I think she could do a kickass dance track with them.

I liked the Martin Gore rumors a lot. I"d drool over an album with Gore, New Order, and The Pet Shop Boys. '80s-tastic.

I'm not sure. I'll have to think about that one. I'd want something classic AND modern, but not trendy.
