Retiring music from your iPod/Nomad/mp3 player

So what's your rationale for deleting music from your mp3 player to open up space for new music?

I have a 40gb player which still has a good little amount of room left on it, but I've had it for a year and I'm still adding and adding, and I know the time will soon come for me to make some space if I wanna keep adding new music.

Now, if I delete stuff from my CD collection, it's not like I'm losing it forever - I still have the CDs and I can re-load them anytime...but the joy of having lots of music in my player is that I can put it on shuffle and hear music I may not necessarily think to choose, and I've come to re-appreciate some ignored gems in my collection this way.

SO.

Has anyone done a "purge" of their iPod or mp3 player? How'd ya decide what stays and what goes?

i just purged all my prince stuff from my ipod last night to make room for non-prince goodies...my rule for deleting stuff is basically if i keep skipping over a song or have grown tired of hearing it, it gets dropped outta my playlist. sometimes i'll delete the song totally from my itunes library but most of the time it'll stay on, in case i wanna re-add it in the future.

i'm REALLY skimpy about what i'll let take up space on my computer, especially now that i have a new one and wanna keep it from getting all jacked up like my last computer...though i think i have tons more memory now, so i probably shouldn't sweat carrying around a buncha music files on my laptop.

that said, i'm thinking about purging most of my prince bootleggage from my nomad...some of it i love, but most of the live stuff i just like one or two tracks from, and i'll usually skip over when he's noodling around on some instrumental and letting everyone else solo all over the place...yawn.

I only have 4G to work w/ on my mini so I have to be selective. Albums in full are in ITunes but I only update certain playlists on my IPod. Some playlists have 2 versions - Jazz for the Pod has certain shit, while Jazz Home has all my Jazz.

Takes longer but I gotta do it. I'm really thinking about upgrading confused

i'm thinking of going through and deleting duplicates - like i might have a song as part of a greatest hits album and then the same song in the original album release...but then again, sometimes i like listening to someone's greatest hits and i don't want gaps. so maybe i won't do that. lol

can you make playlists to get around that sort of thing?

yes, but that would require an Effort, most likely on my part. lol

Anx, what kind of MP3 do you have? If it's an IPod, can't you make ONE playlist w/ your entire library on it, delete only the songs you don't like/listen to from the playlist & have your IPod only update songs from that particular playlist? That's not too bad in terms of effort smile

meh?

no, i have a Nomad, though i hear its playlist functions aren't that terribly different from an iPod. i have a few playlists for certain kinds of stuff...i have one for the gym and one that's all spoken word stuff...but plain ol' shuffle play is always 'anything goes'...

No matter how many songs I have on my player,I listen to the same songs over and over
I deleted a few albums two days ago. Just like Hands said, the songs/albums I always skip over are the ones I delete

If I haven't listened to it in a week or two, it's gone! No sense it keeping it on there if it's not getting any play. Besides that, I can just put it back on there if I change my mind. I dislike clutter intensely.

one or two weeks? harsh! lol

i figure if it's taken me a year to almost fill up 40gb, i can do with an annual purge and give what's in my player a year to impress me. i never know when a certain sound is going to mesh perfectly with a perfect mood, and as a music geek, i live for those weird little moments when things come together for me.
