In fact, I just had to go and play something by The Who just so I could remember what Roger Daltrey sounds like. lol doh! His voice just never sticks in my mind, and to me is somewhat boring. But that's mostly just because they were never a band that I got into at all, so I can't even really compare the whole Who vs. Zeppelin thing that always comes up.* shrug Oh, but Keith Moon was a good friend of Bonzo's and he did play with Zeppelin a couple of times during the '77 tour, during the encores. nod

*That said, I'll bet the I'll become this huge fan of The Who now. lol Whenever I say that I don't particularly like an artist, THAT is the artist that I'll start listening to just to double check my original opinion. biggrin Ah, such is the way of me. neutral

What about Love, Reign O'er Me, I could tottaly hear Zep doing that song?

Yeah, it's a good song. I love the guitar work in it. nod I don't know if I could see Zep doing it though. hmmm It sounds more Pink Floydish to me actually.

Oh, definately John on drums IF you're looking for a "in the pocket" drummer. He was one of the funkiest drummers ever. Keith was an insanely talented drummer. As far as just straight out skill, I would give it to Keith. Pete was one of the best songwriters in rock. Very versatile. But, he couldn't fuck with Page as a "guitarist". Page, also was a great songwriter, when it came to riffs. Not a true songwriter, cuz he didn't write lyrics, Plant did. Not the case in Pete's case. He wrote lyrics and music. Pete and Page were both great leaders and producers. Entwistle was a great rock bassist. John Paul was that as well, but waaay more versatile. His keyboard work was paramount to Zepp's sound. More talented, J.P. was, so I go with him on that.

excellent summary.

Thanx, lil. That's a compliment coming from u.

Any fans here. I became one awhile back by being exposed to them a number of different ways. I was just wondering because I wanted to get into and hear more of their stuff and learn more about them. I was wanting to know if you know of any good sites with some good info on them as far as stuff like When they were formed, how long they stayed together, why they broke up and like the best or most essential recordings of theirs to have.

Right now I only have a few songs by them that i've heard but i'd love to get into more of their stuff.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The band formed in 1968, and started out orginally under the name The New Yardbirds since Jimmy Page was trying to re-group the Yardbirds. He got all new band members and changed the name to Led Zeppelin. The band existed for 12 years.

As for your question about why they broke up, their drummer John Bonham (Bonzo) died in 1980. sad From that moment on, they were no longer a band since he was irreplaceable.

I'd suggest their first 6 albums to start with. lol

Led Zeppelin I

Led Zeppelin II

Led Zeppelin III

Led Zeppelin IV (or Zoso, or "The Four Symbols" album)

Houses of the Holy

Physical Graffiti

Their other 3 studio albums that followed are probably best appreciated by diehard fans. biggrin

This is an awesome Zeppelin site:

http://www.led-zeppelin.com/home.html

They have great forums in the message board section, and also a "newbie" forum that houses all the threads with any basic questions about the bands that most new fans want to ask. nod

(I'm a regular there, but I'm not saying under which name I post lol )

Thanks for the info.

That's the thing about Zepp. Sure, there are songs by them that I CAN"T get with. But, I dig more of their stuff than not. Also, I relate to their mystery. They worked that to death, especially Page. So much so that it went hand and hand with their music. Early 80's Prince had the same effect. P borrowed so much from Zep in terms of this. Anyways, I have a lot of Zepp's live stuff on cd and yeah, they brought it in their live shows. The film "Song Remains The Same" is o.k., but I don't feel it captures Zepp at their best live. They definately had a power that many bands at that time just didn't have.
