EWF doing Target commercials

...so sad. the best R&B group of all time pimpin the second worst chain store in the country. i knew "Illumination" flopped but damn, apparently Phillip and the Boys still needed the bucks. you'd think they wouldn't be at all strapped for cash after their tour which was awesome.

I've been meaning to say something about this ever since those commercials began around thanksgiving. As much as I love them and their legacy, this was just overkill and desperate. I'm not going to fault them for being paid handsomely for the privilege ( the more those commercials are played, the more they are paid ), it's just a shame they went that route.

Girl, you haven't seen these? lol They're rather irritating to be honest. I mentioned them in another thread. It seems like every song in their catalogue is in a Target commercial. The worst was September, and they changed the lyrics to reflect Christmas.

Do you remember...
...the 25th night of December?

barf

And it sounded like them singing that stuff.

Are you generally against a group doing commercials or having their songs used in commercials?

When would you consider it ok? Or better still, is it EVER ok for a legendary band (EWF) or any legendary artist to have their songs used in commercials?

The reason this gets under my skin is because it's several commercials with several different songs. It's just all too much.

Ok Rip...I see your point. I am a little biased, I will admit, because I see it as great that despite EWF not getting the airplay they deserve with their latest album, they are still out there doing their thing and getting exposure in the media.

I only wanted to determine if there was a general double-standard out there against Legacy artists having their songs used for commercial purposes while other entertainers of maybe less reknown are out there making money from appearances in or having their music used in commercials.

Nah, nothing like that. EWF are one of my favorites. It's gotten to the point where everyone is selling their songs, so it doesn't even bother me anymore.

Let them be PAID in peace.

Gosh, after a long line of blues, soul and other black musicians whose music was stolen and taken mainstream, it's nice to see someone get some recognition and (I hope) money while they're alive and well.

If a no-talent act like Britney can hawk her stinky perfume, EWF can do their thing, too.

Ain't mad at 'em one bit.

The only reason I'm mad is that Phillip keeps trying to sing like Maurice. That's some irritating crap right there.

nod Gotta agree with that. He doesn't have the edge, the timbre. Maurice is a classic.

I've seen these commercials and I have no problem with it.It means more exposure and more money for them, and they certainly deserve it.Also, maybe these commercials will draw attention to the fact they have a great new album in stores (the poorly promoted 'Illumination') and that's a good thing.

I totally agree. The music businness is exactly that...a business.EW&F has worked really hard for so many years, they deserve the chance to cash in like so many other artists, bands and rappers are now doing.

I agree,I wish Philip would stick to falsetto. That's what he is known for.The guys should have kept Sheldon Reynolds in the band.He was more than capable of handling Maurice's vocal parts. Now that he is gone,Phil has to do double duty and he only sounds good singing in falsetto.
