While not nearly as big as Motown, the Philly music is just as good. Jean Carne, Phyllis Hyman and
Teddy Pendegrass all made really good music on the Philadelphia international label.

I would agree with you. As much as I love Motown, I think the 70s era of soul, particularly Philly soul was more adventurous. Not to take anything at all away from the Motown sound, but there's a layered sound to the Philly sound that really was musically brilliant. It's all about those horns, strings and falsettos.

The Philly Sound rules!! I am in the process of collecting everything that was produced by Gamble and Huff in the 70s.I have most of this stuff already.This is soul music at it's highest point,imo.

I heard a Teddy Pendergrass not long ago, that i liked a lot, called "It don`t hurt now"
"Could it be i`m falling in love" is good, but i prefer Regina Belle`s cover.

I love Philly! Anybody own the 14 album vinyl box set "The Philadelphia Story 1971-1986"released on Streetsounds in GB in the 80ees? this one's just too marevellous for words Outstanding!

"It Don't Hurt Now" is from his 1978 album,'Life Is A Song Worth Singing'.This album is a soulful masterpiece....probably the best album that Gamble and Huff ever produced,with the possible exception of the Ojays' albums from this period.

for one Barry white did not record for Philly international,please before you post something do your research and know before you post. Barry white recorded for 20th century records and before that he recorded for Uni records with Love unlimited. and before that he played on jesse belvin's "Goodnight my love" on Old town" so lets get it right.

Even though I wasn't old enough to party when Philly International was in its heyday, I still say it's some of the best stuff. Too bad it's not around like it used to be.

in the early 60's Kenny and leon started a label called "Neptune" which was the pre cursor to Pi, back then ther where a few labels from Philly that made noise,Phil la of soul ( cliff nobles & co,) Philly Groove records ( Delfonics,first choice etc.) im not sure if Avco was Philly based.

I love when they talk about the recording sessions for certain songs,like The O'Jay's "Backstabbers" and Harold Melvin and the BlueNote's "Bad Luck".It's so exciting to read.
