It Was Hot at the BET Awards: Usher Wins Best Male R&B Artist, B2K Takes Viewers' Choice Award! Heat was certainly the theme of the 2nd Annual BET Awards, as there were plenty of pyrotechnics both on and off the stage. If there was anything immediately evident in the awards' sophomore telecast, it was that everything was upgraded. The show moved from its original home at the Paris Hotel in Las Vegas to the much bigger Kodak Theater in Los Angeles. The Kodak was recently home to the historic Academy Awards, where you'll remember that Black Star Power was on display when Denzel Washington, Halle Berry and Sidney Poitier all picked up Oscars. Advertisement Black Star Power was evident even off the stage. Attendees included basketball stars Mike Bibby, Vince Carter and Samaki Walker, as well as Truth Hurts, Jada Pinkett-Smith, Chris Tucker, Chante Moore and new husband Kenny Lattimore. Onstage, performers included Nelly, Ja Rule, Tweet, Gerald Levert, Yolanda Adams and honorees Earth, Wind and Fire. There were even performances for the fans on the red carpet, as they enjoyed live shows from Cash Money and Truth Hurts. "No other awards show has this much talent on one night," said awards show co-host Steve Harvey. "Not the Grammys, not the MTV Awards; when we come together like we did tonight, it's outta sight." Winners included an emotional India.Arie for Best Female R&B Artist; Laila Ali, who beat out Serena and Venus Williams as Best Female Athlete; P. Diddy and Busta Rhymes for Best Video for "Pass the Courvoisier;" B2K for the coveted Viewers' Choice Award and surprise winner Outkast in the Best Group category. There were some tense moments during a commercial break when it appeared to those in the audience that Suge Knight and Snoop Dogg were ready to rumble. Suge, dressed in bright red leather, sat right across from Snoop when a seat became available. The two exchanged words and things quickly got tense. Since the show was broadcast live to the East Coast, for a minute it looked like the confrontation would spill over into the broadcast. Steve Harvey asked for respect, then Suge walked to the stage and the two men had a brief conversation. Snoop moved toward the backstage entrance, but stayed visible there for most of the show. Suge came in, and sat in the same row w/ Snoop. They started staring at each other, and Snoop got up, and moved closer to Suge. Everybody started standing up. Next the entire area got the fuck up, and left, so called hard core rappers, industry insiders, wanna bes, erybody was like whoa. The exits was all jammed up, and folks was heading for the door. Then Steve Harvey got on the mike, and was asking for order, but the whole orchestra section was empty except for them, and their people. Then when the commercial was over, and they went back on erybody was still all up in the exits not trying to come back to their seats. Then Snoop got up, and rolled out, and came back w/ changed clothes in all blue crip colors. Anyway, it calmed down, and the show went on, but it was tense for a while. They say money don't buy you luv. But it'll help w/ the search. | |
