One could assume ... but hey I'm killing time and it's a fairly short thread. I saw the news of her sampling a song I like and decided to join the thread. I am all for sampling because at least the track is going to have a damn melody. No one's going to bother writing original melody in the mainstream R&B/pop world, so I take what I can get.

Janet is not tone deaf, although she doesn't have much range and she admits this herself. She did hit a high D6 in He Doesn't Know I'm Alive, though. However, the songs she sings do not require a large range and she chooses them wisely to accomodate her voice, which is a hell of a lot better tonally than the likes of Hilary Duff or Lindsay Lohan. There have always been (and will always be) far less competent female vocalists than Janet.

I thought Janet's vocals were GREAT on "Island Life." I thought that she demonstrated a pretty good range. She doesn't have a powerful voice, per se, but she has a pleasing vocal quality. In a way, her voice is sort of a throw back to someone like Doris Day. Have you all ever seen that old classic movie "Love Me or Leave Me" with Doris Day and Jimmy Cagney(sp??)? Doris was playing singer Ruth Etting. I love that movie along with Pillow Talk!! lol lol lol Anyway, Doris' voice wasn't powerful, but it was very melodic... soothing. Ya know, I sort of think that Janet's facial features, structure resembles Doris Day... obviously Janet being the African American, much, much younger version.
