fucking sick of the Madonna vs Mariah BS OK, let me give my two cents:
Madonna's album was good, Mariah's album was good. Mariah has the voice Madonna will never have, Madonna's the entertainer/icon Mariah will never be Mariah's album is doing extremely hot, and with the upcoming promotion for "sorry", Madonna's album could do just as hot as well(for the record, Madonnas sales arent exactly pitiful at all). Both are totally different. Mariah's album was meant to connect with todays hiphop/soul music scene(nothing wrong with that), while Madonna's album is a dance CD that's kinda a mirror reflection of what's going on in Europe. So really, WHATS THE BIG FUCKING ARGUMENT?!!

Not TOO far a stretch really. Madonna's more of a dance oriented performance artist and Mariah's more of an R+B singer, but they've both done their fair share of straight up pop and adult contemporary.

Well, I am a Mariah hater and all, but I have to say that if you are going to argue an area where Mariah is better than Madonna, dance songs isn't the place. Madonna is renowned for her dance material. Her string of number 1 dance hits is unrivaled in modern music, especially by someone like Mariah. Now...R and B efforts would probably be where you could argue Mariah has the upper hand. Feel free to join in the Prince Album Poll 2018! these are two different women singing two different kinds of music. The only thing they have in common is that they are women that sing.
You can't compare the two, like PaisleyPark said, its like water to chocolate.... I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

Mariah puts a lot of work into her mixes, resinging the vocals and handpicking the remixers.

IMHO both are severely overrated.
I don't care how good of a voice Mariah has I will never be able to take her seriously. She's such a bimbo and her videos get more tacky with each new one. Madonna has a very average voice, she's a terrible actress, she's so over blown by her fans that most will never recognize just how average she is.

And that is partially why Mariah did such great single sales in the 90's (lower price didn't hurt any ). While Madonna had a lot of great remixes, the vocals had a tendency to sound canned, because they were just sped up to work as a dance single. Mariah almost always re-recorded the vocals, and it worked well for her dance tunes. I absofuckinglutely love David Morales' house mix of Fantasy. It's

Madonna brought Jr, Peter Rauhofer when he was Club 69, Thunderpuss, David Moralas, Tracy Young, William Orbit yes he did her mixes before Ray of Light, Ralphie Rosirio, Deepsky, Jacques Lu Count, Victor Caledrone, Sasha, Groove Armada, Shep Pettibone, into the mainstream. I never said she didn't. But Mariah puts a lot more work into hers, from the resung vocals to the completely different lyrics and structural elements. There's no comparison. And she did NOT bring all those remixers into the mainstream. Many of them were doing mainstream remixes long prior to their work with Madonna. I sure as hell don't know why you put Shep (absolutely laughable), David and Thunderpuss on that list, for example. She did manage to catch Tracy Young pretty early in her career, I'll give her that much. [Edited 12/17/05 5:56am]

I find the competetiveness between their fans so fascinating. I remember reading on a Madonna fansite how great her new album would be and all this "take that Mariah!" type comments. I think they're both interesting as examples of what it means to be successful women in pop music. Mariah had her Svengali, Tommy Mottola, helping her early commercial success. But she seems to have paid a heavy personal price for it, in terms of how she talks about the relationship and its effect on her. She has an amazing voice, yet it took her a long time to get more control of her music and make it more personal and, to me, more entertaining.
Madonna made the right connections throughout the 80s without the help of any one man, except for possibly Seymour Stein who was a big champion at Sire Records, her old label. By connections I mean she's worked with lots of great producers (Nile Rodgers, Jellybean Benitez, Patrick Leonard) and still does. She's been championed as a very independent female performer, but you could argue that her major accomplishments were controlling her image and being the one who marketed herself sexually, as opposed to a male associate like a manager or executive.
