Check Out This Funk....... I did a thread a few months ago asking if there was any decent funk made in the last ten years. Someone sent me an orgnote suggesting an album called "Secret Weapon" by an artist named Marcel who has a very Prince-like sound. I clicked on the link and was very pleased. I'm seriously thinking about ordering this album.
When you click the link, look over to the left and click to hear a two minute sample of the songs, "Secret Weapon" (Track 2) and "Cosmopolitan" (Track 3). Let me know what you think. Here's the link: http://cdbaby.com/cd/marcel5 . . [Edited 12/28/05 11:51am] Andy is a four letter word.

The upside: Its sound like the funk from the 80s!
Downside: Its sounds like it was recorded in the 80s - on a budget. I actually like the material but I am having a hard time of getting past the low grade production. I liked Cosmopoliton, Body Electric and Music/Afterparty. He has a Melvin Riley meets Andre Cymone and Bobby Nunn quality to him. Its cool.

It does sound dated, but in a cool kinda way. Good thread, Vain. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

That's true. But in this day and time, I'm desperate for funk. I'll take what I can get. I actually like the material but I am having a hard time of getting past the low grade production. Besides Prince, I definately hear a little Andre Cymone influence in it. My favorite is the title track, "Secret Weapon", although it does sound like he was trying to copy Prince and Andre a little too hard. He has great influences but I think if he brought a little more of himself into it, he could be a great artist (although the radio would probably never play him). I also like "Cosmopoliton" and could kind of half way get into "Come On Baby". I'm curious to see what the other tracks sound like that don't have sound samples. "Secret Weapon" is only one of his albums. I checked out some of the samples of some of his other albums but they had a lot of jazz and hip hop influences in them which is not my style at all. For those that do get into that sort of thing, they may want to check them out. Andy is a four letter word.
