I have to disagree. He's not only stylish but a good singer. Maybe it's the scratchy voice that you don't like.

Not that I'm into his "jazz" stuff, but...

Well, it's his scratchiness, his pitch and his arrangements. That's all.

What do you mean by his arrangements?

IMHO - most singers today can not really sing, however, that doesn't mean they don't have some measure of talent and some can be quite pleasant to the ear. For example:

Mary J. - quite often sings off key, but I like her sound.
Bob Dylan - some say he can't sing at all, but the emotion and passion he sings with are enough for me, not to mention that his lyrics are the best ever.
Lauryn Hill - She's not a great singer at all, but I love the passion in her voice.
Rod Stewart - has a raw, raspy voice that some don't like, but I think it's very pleasing to the ear and is loaded with style.
Mick Jagger - great rock and roll voice.
Melissa Etheridge - I love her voice, but many don't.

Anyway, my point is there are not a lot of singers with great voices, but many singers have a sound that we like even if their voices are not great.

Amerie can't sing for shite!

Also, i'd like to add Al B Sure but that's not coming from me. I love his voice and his first album but a lot of people claimed he couldn't sing. Whatever, Kyle West break it down...

For someone whose promotion was all about "The Voice is Back", Mariah Carey certainly doesn't use it much. confused

Oh, and I totally second, third, fourth and umpteenth the nomination of Nelly Furtado. Her nasal chords are incredibly grating! headache

i wouldn't disagree with the mention of beck if it wasn't for 'sea change'. he does some beautiful stuff on there vocally...and i'd say, okay, it was just some nice studio trickery (and i'm sure much of it was), but he was able to pull off the 'sea change' songs live when i heard him in chicago this year, and i've heard performances from his last tour where he sounded equally as strong with that material.

his RAPPING on the other hand... lol

i can see how she's not everyone's cuppa tea, but i think bjork has an amazing voice. she can do things with her pipes that few other vocalists can, and she's very precise with her style of singing...and she holds up damn well in concert.

That is correct sir.

Bjork's style is definitely unique, but she really knows how to use her voice and it's really impressive live.

Not all "boy bands" are my cup of tea, but plenty of them can certainly sing. In fact, I can guarantee you get a better show from them because they get so much crap for not being able to sing that they are forced to perform live, and often a cappella. Then you can really separate the crap from the cream of the crop. It's like anything; there are good ones, and there are bad ones. Or there are ones that I just don't prefer to others. For every artist you don't like, there's someone out there who loves them.

Britney Spears had really good pipes as a kid, but unfortunately, they computerized the hell out of her voice on record and convinced her to start singing like a purring sex kitten. I still like the way she sounds on her first album.

Michael Hutchence? You dare bring him up in this thread? It's a travesty.

How about Apollonia? Can. Not. Sing. Worth. Shit.

And Madonna? Her later albums are proof positive that she can sing. And check out the repeat of her "Fever" performance on "Saturday Night Live" if you can catch it sometime - totally awesome. I love the way she sounds now. Shakira's Spanish albums are fantastic. But in terms of her English albums, no one else here sounds like her, and I think you either love her voice or you hate it. I don't think there's any true medium. I personally love it because she is so different. That's why I love Alanis Morissette, too. Her voice is unlike anything you heard before on the radio.

I wouldn't say Mary J. Blige can't sing, but to me, she overdoes it to the point that I can't listen anymore. I can't stand Rod Stewart for much the same reason, or Michael Bolton. But people adore them, so hey, what do I know?

I really love her tone but even she admits she's not much of a vocalist lol I think she's had some very decent vocals over the decades, though. She's leagues ahead of Ciara or Britney, that's for sure.

She hits her highest note on that track. I like the attitude and verve she can bring to a track. Like Madonna, chutzpah gets you far. Most of the pop stars of today come across as brainless, vacant cows.

I also really liked:

The Best Things In Life Are Free (it shows how good her tone is, how well it mixes with Luther; if she really was terrible this track would be a hot mess)
Love Will Never Do (Without You) (starting off in lower register and then going up an octave or two for the second verse - pretty)
Rhythm Nation
New Agenda
Black Cat

Isel

Anthony Keidis but he's a great performer and lyricist He really sings off-key. I never seen him in a live performance when he has held pitch.

Ashlee Simpson, Lindsay Lohen... All of those rock "wannabe" chicks...

I'll also add Jessica Simpson, too, coz I just don't like her voice (or maybe it's exaggerated facial movements when she performs) although I can't really say that she can't sing. She just always looks like she's trying too hard.
