Songs That Console You I had one of the most distressing, emotionally disturbing days the other day. So when I came home I scoured my CD collection for something...ANYTHING...that would console me and ease my heart. Not that my CD collection is very big or anything , but I landed on Vespertine by Bjork and played it over and over again.
And indeed, those gentle, crystalline, intricate yet simple songs soothed me. What are some CDs or songs that have been there for you when you needed them the most?

Vespertine is absolutely one of those albums, although it can be painful too. It's so gorgeous it hurts, ya know?
There's something extremely spiritual and nurturing about what Bjork does and it's at its most concentrated on that album. It's one of the most magical, special and awe-inspiring works that I know by any artist in any medium. Good choice.

I don't think I truly appreciated this album until the other day when it really served me. It had a way of transforming the pain and moving it in a very deep, careful way. The more I played it, the more it did it's work. I like what you say about it being nurturing.

yup. Verspertine sure is one of them!
another Björk fav of mine to console me is "ScatterHeart". that is my ultimate song to play when I am feeling bad. but a whole array of Björk songs is excellent for that purpose. they range from being hurt and feeling bad to feeling better and wanting to strike back to just bein sure of yourself and proud and happy. and a few by other artists: You Made me the Thief of your Heart - Sinead o' Connor (bono/gavin friday) Stay (far away, so close) - U2 Dear Chicago - Ryan Adams Survive - David Bowie Love Less - New Order Show - Beth Gibbons & Rustin Man How to Disappear Completely - Radiohead Liquid Diamonds - Tori Amos (surrender, then start your engines) Medallia of the Grey Skies - Smashing Pumpkins Tomorrow Never Knows - the Beatles Let Down - Radiohead Today has been OK - Emiliana Torrini

Lest not forget this one:
Pray God you can cope. I stand outside this woman's work, This woman's world. Ooh, it's hard on the man, Now his part is over. Now starts the craft of the father. I know you have a little life in you yet. I know you have a lot of strength left. I know you have a little life in you yet. I know you have a lot of strength left. I should be crying, but I just can't let it show. I should be hoping, but I can't stop thinking Of all the things I should've said, That I never said. All the things we should've done, That we never did. All the things I should've given, But I didn't. Oh, darling, make it go, Make it go away. Give me these moments back. Give them back to me. Give me that little kiss. Give me your hand. (I know you have a little life in you yet. I know you have a lot of strength left. I know you have a little life in you yet. I know you have a lot of strength left.) I should be crying, but I just can't let it show. I should be hoping, but I can't stop thinking Of all the things we should've said, That were never said. All the things we should've done, That we never did. All the things that you needed from me. All the things that you wanted for me. All the things that I should've given, But I didn't. Oh, darling, make it go away. Just make it go away now.

There is not one better than Vespertine. When I think of my music collection in terms of genre, this and one other stand togehter in a little section I call "my sacred islands of solace", the other being Lisa Gerrard's Immortal Memory. I really can't say it any better than Gangstafam:
