Why wasn't Angela Bassett contacted for this? Or Joy Bryant? Or Kerry Washington?

With that said, i can say that Mary's been in a BET movie, and had a forgettable appearance on an episode of Jamie Foxx.

I'd say this would be a stretch. Fuc that..it'll be like me on GLadiators trapped in a Leg lock, being torn from the rings by a bitch name Sable.

If she should pull it off, she'll have my total respect.

So who would put in her place? Angie Stone, Lauryn Hill, Pam Grier, Sista Soldja?

Lauryn Hill would have been perfect for this role.

Lauryn Hill, love her as I do, is about as unbearable to watch as Kanye these days.

Great producer, good lyricist . . .

and condescending, massively self-absorbed egomaniac.

He's kinda fly.
And i loved the patterned hair.
Alright. I'm officially shallow. I must admit he's a blabber. I just like to look.

Not too thrilled about this at all.But on the other hand, I'm a little biased because despite popular opinion, I think Mary J. Blige is one of THE most overrated vocalist out there, who owes a large part of her success to re-recording other people's songs.

I am willing to give her a chance I suppose, but so far I think they should have chosen a professional actress to play someone likn Nina. From this, I hope no one inspired to do a movie on the life of Patti Labelle, and cast Beyonce' in the lead role. rolleyes.

I am convinced Beyonce's career would not be where it is, if she had dark skin.

I don't think popular opinion is that she's a great vocalist. There are plenty of people who don't like her. They are, of course, all wrong, but they're out there with you somewhere. biggrin

I love Mary's prior work but most of the stuff she's done lately has been forgettable, IMHO. She's not a "great" vocalist (few singers are) but has made and can make good songs.

You`re right, you don`t NEED to sound like Whitney Houston in order to be a serious recording artist. Just look at someone like Sade, who doesn`t necessarily have the best voice, but her music is so good that it doesn`t matter. I guess that`s what separates the singers from the artists.Family affair is a brilliant song

There´s a lot of GREAT performers with limited voices.Among others Billie Holiday, Debbie Harry, Madonna... There are also great voices without personality: Celine Dion. Mary J. Blige has an excellent vocal range (not Chaka, probably, but not Janet Jackson either) and a powerfull personality.

Wasn't she in a movie called "Prison Song"? They used to air it on BET all the time (you know how BET is). Q-Tip was in it and MJB played his mother and the guy from 'Lost' played his step-father. If I remember correctly, she's not terrible. Who knows? She might do Nina justice. I'm just excited that a biopic is being made.

Yeah let's give Ms. Blige a chance...She may be able to pull it off...I think she's a powerful talent....I just heard the duet she did with U2, a remake of "One"...The shit gave me chills...
