Black Country Music artists Besides Charley Pride.

Do any of you know of any? Me and a friend of mine were having this discussion at work the other day, and we couldn't think of any. The only reason I knew about Charley Pride is because my Dad used to make us watch HEE-HAW when I was a kid.(Those of you under the age of Thirty should ask your Mom or Pops about that show). Lionel Richie and Ray Charles don't count. Although they dabbled in it, They are'nt considered country artists.

To me, Ray Charles is like an older version of Prince. You can't put him in one musical category. He did it all. You name it. Rock, Blues, R&B, Gospel, Big Band Swing and yes Country. You can't label Ray Charles just a country music artist.

I agree that Ray is not considered a Country artist, but he was (among other things, as you point out).

It's hilarous I'd come across this thread today! I was at work earlier and came across some stuff by a black county singer named Neal McCoy. biggrin It tripped me out.

There's also Cleve Francis, who's been around for a while. I know him because my mom was into... ahem... country. redface

I am over 30 and I remember Hee Haw. The only other black country star I can think of is a guy named Big Will Downing. I think he had some country hits.

I love it! Great response everyone. First of all, I should've said anyone under the age of 25 or 24 probably wouldn't remember Hee Haw. I only liked that show for 2 reasons. The Hee Haw Honeys (Enough Said!) and that stupid song that those old men standing by the fence used to sing that went kind of like this "Where! Where! Are You Tonight? Why Did You Leave Me Here All Alone?" Me and my brother would sing real loud when they said "You Found Another And (FART) You Were Gone". lol Latoya Jackson had the balls to do a country album? Lord have mercy. I'm going to go on a limb and ask if there is one..... Just one halfway decent song on it. And are you all sure Stoney Edwards is black? That man looks like he just has a good sun tan. And whoever put that picture up of Darius Rucker from the Burger King commercial, You are crazy(funny) lol lol Seriously though, I'd like to hear some of Deford Bailey's music. He must be pretty good, to be inducted into the Grand Ol Opry's Hall of Fame. Has anyone heard Redd Foxx's joke about HEE HAW? I won't repeat it because it may offend some people on here. Peace Out

On the documentary,They showed a some clips of Deford playing the harmonica. He could play the hell of the harmonica. He was difenitley good.I think he was a trendsetter for country music.
