Oh for crying out loud; give me a break with all this "we'll never know who the best guitarist is..." BS.
You certainly know what the author of this thread is getting at, albeit, as Blackguitar dude said, it's a bit mundane... But the best known or most influential guitarist can easily be recognized or qualified by certain standards. Personally, the best guitarist I've ever heard is McLaughlin. The most influential has to be Hendrix.

theres no such thingas the BEST to be really honest...Many people have called me the greatest they have ever heard...I know most of the time im channeling somebody i love ie:jimi, prince, stevie ray,...tony maiden..freddie and sly stone...it all comes down to what u dig...steve vai is amazing but his funk aint fonky enough 4 me...how could i argue with one of his fans about "is he´s better or worse" than a dude that knows only a handful of chords and cant really solo BUT can ROCK THE SHIT OUT OF SOME WAH FONK IN E ??? its all about personal preference...and mine is JIMI HENDRIX !!! Maybe even the most inventive depending on what you mean by inventive, is Brian May. From trumpet sounds, to creating a dixie land jazz band (good company) with his guitar "orchestrations" from the deaky amp his home made guitar he built with his dad most guitarists aren't open minded enough to even wrap their minds around the things he thought of doing with the guitar. I guess because they were more on the technical side instead of groundbreaking playing (like Hendrix).
Stevie Ray wasn't the most innovative, but each note he played was so powerful & beautiful, that he has to be up there with the all time greats. Jimi was innovative, influential, and just plain good, not to mention the impact he had as a songwriter/arranger. Eddie Van Halen gets overlooked nowadays because his music is out of fashion and Stevie Vai may do it better, but he started a new revolution in guitar. Jimmy Page is great, but he's more of a riff-maker. Actually I'm more into this aspect of guitar playing than the huge wailing solos right now. And just because he played bluesy stuff doesn't mean he's not an innovator. Zeppelin hardly sounds like Robert Johnson. For pure influence Robert Johnson might be the greatest. He's like the Velvet Underground. They might not have sold many albums, but every person who buys one starts a band of their own. And Robert Johnson has the whole mythology that people who've never heard of him specifically have heard. He didn't play solos, but he, like Hendrix, was capable of lead & rhythm playing all at once. And like Hendrix, he was a brilliant songwriter and singer. There's no real answer, but I still pick the obvious--Jimi. Check this song out at:

Overall good post Best ROCK guitarplayer of all time and the most evelutionary all categories to me is Jimi. The most innovative ROCK guitarplayers since Jimi are probably Eddie Van Halen - the man should not be overlooked. He took the rock guitar to another level in terms of technique in the 70's. Yngwie Malmsteen - nowdays often rediculed because of his somewhat bizarre appearance and constantly plagiating himself. He is lost I must say but when he got famous almost 25 years ago he did something completely new. He could shred like no other rock guitar player trying to be the Paganini in rock music. Back in the day he actually played with his ears rather than his fingers as oppose to today. Stevie Vai - perfectionist and very talented. He has the Hendrix approach in terms of trying to create interesting sounds combined with an impressing technique and good melodic sense. [Edited 11/22/05 18:30pm]

theAudience said: No disrespect, but this is one of those pointless questions.
(outside of generating a spirited debate) "The Greatest Guitar Player of All-Time" is someone none of us has even heard yet. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 Its Jimi. If it is someone we never heard of as of yet then that means he doesn't matter as of yet. So for right now its Jimi.
