Hendrix is up there. But he gets the overall vote all the time cos he's dead, and died young. A guy like Jimmy Page is as good IMO

I presume that you have limited your question to include only electric rockguitarplayers? How could you compare a classical guitar player like Segovia or John Williams or Göran Söllscher to Hendrix, or jazzfusion guitar like Allan Holdsworth...Or better yet, how can you compare a flamenco/fusion guitarist like Paco De Lucia to Hendrix...totally different styles of music and different styles of technique. I've played the guitar since I was a child and I've tried different styles...impossible to compare IMO.

Page is sloppy compared to Hendrix. And there would be no Page if it wasn't for Hendrix. You must be a white boy. Everytime somebody mentions how great Hendrix is/was whatever, a white cat pops up talking about Page, Halen, or Clapton. The latter wanted to quit playing guitar period after he heard Jimi. That should tell you something. Jimi had every guitar player in London spooked. And he was far from dead, in fact he was just getting started.

No disrespect, but this is one of those pointless questions.
(outside of generating a spirited debate)

hmmm "The Greatest Guitar Player of All-Time" is someone none of us has even heard yet.

I guess hendrix is (and it had nothing to do with him being black)

If u said favourite? Clapton definately. If its something as "classic" as Layla or on solo's like "grand illusion", dude has the best sound for me.

The greatest must be Hendrix.

But my favourite is Eddie Van Halen,I grew up with his music
and I still haven't heard anyone who has that marvelous sound
he has.
No,not even Steve Vai(though I liked his work with Dave)
or Satriani.
It's a matter of taste.

You saying I must be white means shit. What the fucks that got to do with anything? Most white people (in Europe at least) say Jimi was the best anyway. Hendrix was good, in fact fucking amazing, maybe the best we have heard yet, but whether you like it or not Hendrix got more props cos he died young. Thats what happens. It clouds people judgement - they just say " he was the best ", like a lot of folk with John Lennon, Marvin Gaye etc. He was cut off before he got started though.

van halen and clapton aint shit on jimi, but jimmy page was really tight.

lol

As another guy said, diffrent strokes. I love Jimi, I really do, but a lot of folk just say " he's the best", cause he died so young.

You being hard on Jimmy Page there i think lol

No, do you need to be so presumptious? I only compared on rock guitar for two guitarists. So many people owe a debt to guys you talk about (Segovia a big debt, a great legacy he left). Jazz guitarists like Django Reinhardt can't really be compared to Hendrix either, even though Jimi loved his music and was greatly influenced by it

Everybody seems to forget this man: John 'Mahavishnu' McLaughlin.
When I discovered his music, my whole perception of 'guitar' changed. He has the most amazing skills I ever heard. He's famous for his work on 'In A silent way' and 'Bitches Brew' with Miles Davis. But then he went on with his own group: Mahavishnu Orchestra. The things he does on those albums are just crazy. Amazing speed, great solo's, and lots of feeling to it. Jimi Hendrix was great, but not in a thousand years could he play McLaughlin stuff.
McLaughlin is a true virtuoso. He also record an album with Carlos Santana, Love devotion surrender. They do an amazing version of Coltrane's Love Supreme.
For those who do not know this man, check him out, right now.

On the other hand.. Hendrix was the most popular guitarist, but in my opinion not the greatest. His playing was either bad or good. Nothing in between.
Jimmy Page is more versatile (just listen to 'white summer'). I'm also a big fan of David Gilmour (Pink Floyd), he's the man when it comes to solo's. Duane Allman also ranks high. It's been said that Duane was very inspired by 'Kind of Blue'. Carlos Santana.. got to mention him also. Pitty he doesn't make music like he did in the old days, but damn he was amazing (Europa! Song of the Wind! Samba pa ti!)

all time... man, It would be an insult to blacks everywhere if I say Stevie Ray Vaughn so I'll say Jimi Hendrix. But who's the smartest most clever guitar player ever? Maybe even the most inventive depending on what you mean by inventive, is Brian May. From trumpet sounds, to creating a dixie land jazz band (good company) with his guitar "orchestrations" from the deaky amp his home made guitar he built with his dad most guitarists aren't open minded enough to even wrap their minds around the things he thought of doing with the guitar. I guess because they were more on the technical side instead of groundbreaking playing (like Hendrix).

U wouldn't offend me by saying Stevie Ray, player. Also, I dig Brian May to death. HUGE influence on me as a guitarist. But, a lot of what May did with "orchestrating" and "layering" the guitar leads and harmonies ALSO was influenced by Jimi's studio version of "The Star Spangled Banner".
