I'm listening to Kate Bush's "The Kick Inside" for the first time...

...and it's really not bad. I was expecting something shrill, spare and annoying from such an early Kate album, but it's really quite pretty. I can't wait to get to know this album better over the holiday week.

Any fans or haters of this album? How's come?

I'm a fan....why?.... "Kite" smile You gotta hear the live one though.....it's even better, imo. "The Kick Inside" is probably my second favorite song from that one. The only song I wasn't too crazy about after the first listen was "Them Heavy People"....it's ok now. smile

As much as I love Kate, I can't listen to the first 2 albums. The voice just kills me.

The magic is heavy on the Kick Inside, Never For Ever has dudes like Babooshka, the Kick Inside is a perfect record to me, though the sound of Never For Ever is eclectic, as if you were trapped in a magical toy store. Violin makes me happy biggrin

Nooooo.....The Sensual World is smile giggle I love the Wedding List btw.....nice visuals to go along with it. lol Someone kills the groom while at the alter and the pregnant bride goes after him and kills him and then kills herself...whoaaa. giggle And Infant Kiss.....those are some pretty out there lyrics too. It's one of my favorites from NFE....my current favorite actually. smile

high pitched giggle I still like the new vocals version of Wuthering Heights better than the original, not because of her high girl-like vocal, but because it's remastered.

Hey Anx, I know you're not a fan of early Kate for the most part, but what have you heard?

I ADORE "Never For Ever" but can't penetrate "The Dreaming" yet. But "Never For Ever" has some classic moments that I think you'd really dig. "Delius", "Babooshka", "Army Dreamers" and "Breathing" are all classics.

i love that album! personally i think it's encrusted with gems. they might not glimmer upon first listen, but after each listen they shine brighter and brighter. at first this was a really difficult album for me because of the vocals, but when i kept in mind Kate's age and her talent at that point in her life i became more forgiving and believe it or not i actually came to love that era of kate, there's something really majestic about her vibe back then, not saying that she didn't mystify me in the years after. smile

I'll have to hunt this one and "Lionheart" soon. I haven't been able to find them in any of the stores I go to.

Listen to The Dreaming and the rest of the tracks that follow late at night with only a candle burning, then you'll be sure to penetrate it. a full moon might also help.

No, not at all. I know most Kate Bush fans swear by the album. I just haven't had much luck. I'm sure I'll give it another chance.

It's a great debut. There's only Strange Phenomena and Room For The Life that I don't much like, the rest of it is wonderful. And the vocals don't bother me at all, altho' I can appreciate some folk having difficulty with them. Interestingly, on the two earliest tracks (recorded in 1975) The Saxophone Song and The Man With The Child In His Eyes, she sings in a lower register, the more shrill stuff came later.
