Kate vs. Tori

http://members.aol.com/ge.../kvst.html

This page has a great comparison between these 2 great women!

Please don't make this thread become another fight between ears with feet and KateBanshees!

I love them both, and get really tired of the comparisons. Sure, they have similar voices, and both are eccentric faerie girls, but that is where the similarity ends. Musically, Kate is much more in line with Peter Gabriel, and Tori is the bastard daughter of The Doors, Led Zepplin and Joni Mitchell.

I have to say, that site does bring up some similarities, basically showing Kate's influence on Tori. Still, musically speaking, the two are extremely different

Cool! Y'know, the first time I heard Tori I basically wrote her off. I liked "Silent All These Years", but just ignored her as a Kate clone. It wasn't until I heard Little Earthquakes that I became enamoured of her, and realized that she was really quite different from Kate.

Absolutely Tori without a doubt. I'm new to Kate's music, so it's not really a a fair comparison since I've loved Tori since the beginning. But everything about Tori I prefer - her voice, her music, her lyrics, her live performance. There's a lot more emotion in her music that I can sink my teeth into. She fills a role in my music collection that I don't get from anyone else.

Tori is just a Kate Bush wannabe. nana

Yeah same here. I started out as a Tori fan too, but now I just have more of an overall respect for Kate Bush's music.

Call me slow lol, but I don't get those Tori comparisons with Led Zepellin either. Joni Mitchell yeah, but not anybody else.

It's in her breathing. It's in her on-stage persona. It's in how she phrases some lyrics.

It's not OUT there. It's subtle.

on some songs I here it, but yeah like you said it's pretty subtle. You know not enough to completely dismiss Kate as a influence like some Toriphiles tend to do....which is weird when it came straight from Tori's mouth that Kate inspires her giggle

Uhmmm
I think Tori is so much more than a Kate-adept. It is just one of her many influences. It's too easy to throw them together with Joni Mitchell as singing waifs. What a load of bollocks.

To me, each of these ladies colours a different hue on the musical pallette. I never ever think of any of the other ladies, unless, of course, Tori covers A Case Of You. But I rather hear her sing a Nirvana cover than a Joni cover...

well, Tori's early work was heavily influenced by Kate/Joni. I was talking about the fans who act as if Kate wasn't even a slight influence on her. Now I think it's unfair for people to call Tori a Kate knock-off.

i've only been familiar with kate's music for a few years but i don't hear much similarities at all. kate's work is very different from tori's, be it better or not. i NEVER listen to kate and think of tori and vice versa. they are both talented women who have quircky, eccentic styles therefore they get compared to one another. i'm sure people compare bjork to kate as well for the same reasons.

i would compare tori to joni mitchell long before seeing similarities between kate and tori. personally, i think all the folks who say tori and kate make similar music are just blinded by tori's initial music mag critiques. after little earthquakes became popular one critic made the comparison (in a british music mag) and after that every music critic began saying it. then all of a sudden it was the common opinion. i really don't hear it or see it. at all.

Huey summed it up nicely!

Maybe the only commom point is that they make feminine music and share all their emotions! Music is their diary! They can touch souls (They do 2 mine!)

I can hear some vocal ticks in common and a similar register. But after that, the similarities end for me too.

i'll never understand westernized thinking (no matter how guilty i am of the same thing). why is it that in order for kate to be great, she must be better thaan tori. and vice versa. it makes no sense. it doesn't have to be a zero-sum scenario. they really could both be excellent with neither being "better."

i love kate's work, i love tori's work. i personally like tori more but that doesn't mean she's better. it speaks for me, not for either woman. dag. y'all have me going crazy over this! lol and that speaks for me, also!
