favorite albums? really, anything he did between 1970 - 1980, you can't go wrong with. it's hard for me to single out an album from those years, because they're all so good. 'ziggy' is a good classic album to start with. if you like that, get 'aladdin sane', because it's kind of a continuation stylistically. if you get the bowie bug, you're in for a LOT of good music.

Which version of 'Aladdin Sane' is the best one? I've seen a single disc and double disc. I really like "John, I'm Only Dancing" (on the bonus disc), but I've read nightmare stories about the remastering on the double disc 'Ziggy Stardust' reissue (which might be why it's now out of print). The 'Aladdin Sane' 2CD isn't bad like that one, is it?

It probably had more to do with the packaging than the remastering.

the packaging of the ziggy 30th anniversary sucked. it fell apart within a couple of weeks, and i'm not exactly rough on my cds. they fixed it with the aladdin sane packaging, and i don't know what they were thinking with the diamond dogs reissue.

The reviews on Amazon about the Ziggy double disc complain about both the sound and the packaging.

My problem is that I'm so anal, if I get the 30th anniversary 2CD of one album, I'll want to also get the 2CD version of the other one just to be consistent. I like the extra tracks, but if the sound quality is inferior then what's the point? Although, like Anxiety, I probably won't be able to tell the difference anyway which might answer my own question.

blah. those sucked. i only have a few of those because i didn't get some of the ryko reissues the first time around. not that the ryko reissues were perfect anyway, but they were certainly more ambitious.

The Ryko were all that were readily available when I started collecting Bowie. I even have a few RCA's. omg

some of those RCA cd's are kind of valuable i think, because they were only semi-legal and lots of them had to be recalled.

yeah... something to do with them not technically having the licensing rights when they decided to put out all the same old shit on CD when that format was introduced. not clear on the story and it's been a very long time since i heard about it. i think Pin Ups, especially, is a valuable one.

My brother in law gave me his old Bowie cassettes, which are the Ryko reissues. I wish they were cheaper to get on CD still; I saw "Ziggy Stardust" Ryko reissue on CD at the used store for $20. Those era-specific bonus tracks are such an awesome idea.

These are the ones I got on cassette:
-The Man Who Sold The World (1970)
-Hunky Dory (1971)
-Space Oddity (1972)
-Ziggy Stardust (1972)
-Diamond Dogs (1974)

I hope to get better versed on these ones before I move on chronologically. geek

the 2-CD 30th anniversary versions of Ziggy, Aladdin and Diamond Dogs have everything that the Ryko versions have, plus more.

I really love those 30th anniversary editions, but I'm so bummed that there's still no "Young Americans". That's the one I was looking forward to most, cuz the bonus material is so fucking fantastic. I hope it still comes out.

whenever i'm interested in getting to know someone's body of work i usually start with two discs, one best of and one "fan favorite." that way, i can get a decent feel as to whether or not i actually want to investigate any further than the hits.

with that, i'd say start with the single disc version of "best of" and "staton to station."

i just saw the single disc version of the best of (mention in 1st post) today. it had 20 songs on it. so now i'm not sure if that's the same one you're referring to. i thought hmmmm Madonna and Bowie on the same day.. both @ $9.99 hmmm but since Moonbeam, Gangsta, and Anxiety are sending me their collections (so to speak) i may have to wait.

and what would i expect from "station to station"?

I have had Changesbowie for ages, and I know Ziggy Stardust the best, which I gather is like his Purple Rain.

I looked at the best of bowie DVD today and it looks awesome!

The single disc version is about as unessential as The Very Best of Prince. Avoid it at all costs.

Artists with the hefty catalogues of Prince and David Bowie simply can not be accurately summarized with a single disc. There are way too many essentials to fit on one disc. Heck, two is even pushing it.

no doubt, but you need to start somewhere. i would not recommend jumping into lodger or low (my two faves, by the way) with no prior exposure to bowie. you kind of have to work your way up that ladder, don't ya think. getting the hits/best of first gives the listener a taste of why the artist was commercially successful. you can then move on (if you liked that stuff) to see why he was artistically revered. let's face it, if chico doesn't like the stuff on the best of, he's not going to like the other stuff, lol!
