GangstaFam & Moonbeam: I've a question 4 u

or other D.B. experts

would this be the best album to get....

.....for someone who is a casual fan of his?it's a double disc right?

i've always enjoyed the singles and some non single tracks, my favourite song by him willo forever be "I'm Afraid Of Americans" but unsure which collection would be the best to get or most complete. and with all the Bowie talk on the forums i figured i should spend the $9.99 and get it giggle though i'd like your opinion 1st. thanks in advance biggrin

Like I always say, I'm not a true hardcore DB fan, but that two-disc Best Of compilation is the more concise way to go, especially if you just need a sampler. Also, try the Ziggy Stardust record...

It's a good collection. Although for my money I'll always prefer the Best of David Bowie 1969-1974 and 1974-1979 Collections. I find that his music is best when broken up into periods. I actually prefer the companion DVD to the collection you mentioned to the actual CD's. Do you have any interest in exploring him further? If so, I'd highly recommend picking up Ziggy Stardust. It'll change your life. wink

for heaven's sake. BANNED!!! mad

just kidding. giggle

as intros to bowie go, 'best of bowie' isn't bad. if you find yourself confronted with different versions of the CD (there are different versions for every country, plus it's been reissued several times with various bonus discs, blah blah blah), spend the extra money and get the two disc set that goes a little more in-depth with the song selection. you won't be disappointed at all.

actually, you know what? instead of buying the CD set, i'd even go so far as to say you should get the 'best of bowie' DVD instead. it has all the hits and the videos you may already be acquainted with, plus it has a treasure trove of less-seen videos and easter eggs. plus, as visual as bowie is as an artist, it's a really proper introduction to all that he's done over the years. plus, if his video for 'wild is the wind' doesn't make your heart melt, you just ain't human.

I'd always had a passing interest in Bowie before the album came out, but I'd never bought anything by him before. Bought the 2CD edition on the day it came out back in '02 and never looked back. I'd say it's a great way into the man's catalog because you can experience the different phases of his career and decide which ones catch you, and then go out and buy the discs from those eras.

Don't buy the single disc edition, though. Also, don't buy the edition that's the disc of hits and the disc of remixes. Look for the version that has two discs of hits on it.

you got netflix? put the best of bowie dvds on your queue, at least.

but do what axchi suggested - get the two disc with the hits, not with the extra bonus crap. it's a good starting off point.

skip that and get the upcoming box set that includes the already released "The Best Of David Bowie 1969-1974" and "1974-1979" with a 3rd disc of "1979-1987". that would be your best bet.

of course you're not going to be getting any of his stellar 90's-now work, but then, you wouldn't be getting much of that with the 2-cd BOB either.

That 2-disc set is quite tight for what it is. I think it stands as the best introduction to his entire career at this point, although it isn't perfect. If you want, I can send you something better. wink

Which version of 'Aladdin Sane' is the best one? I've seen a single disc and double disc. I really like "John, I'm Only Dancing" (on the bonus disc), but I've read nightmare stories about the remastering on the double disc 'Ziggy Stardust' reissue (which might be why it's now out of print). The 'Aladdin Sane' 2CD isn't bad like that one, is it?

i think the remastering on the aladdin sane AND ziggy stardust 30th anniversary reissues is great. i'm not a big audiophile, believe it or not - recordings don't have to be in some super-specific pristine quality for me to enjoy it, so i judge sound quality of stuff like this with a really broad brush...and i noticed a vast improvement with these reissues.

also, the version of 'john i'm only dancing' on the 30th anniversary aladdin sane is the sax version, which i far prefer to the regular version.
