Hurray 4 U2!

I am totally stuck in their pre-Joshua Tree period! I got all of their albums a while back, cuz she have to have them, if you grew up with their music. Both my sisters were HUGE fans, my eldest sister from the get go, the other hooked on later, when my other sister started losing interest.

I actually got them so I could burn copies for my youngest of sisters, who recently got divorced and is relapsing into her old passions; one of them U2. She is currently looking for a new house and when she does I want to surprise her with a three of four cd-set of U2 b-sides.

And there are a lot of them! For collecting's sake I have compiled a list from u2wanderer.org (don't we just love org's?). As my sister is mainly interested in the 'old' U2 (up to Joshua Tree) I have made this list;

What Org does not allow me to copy/paste are the colour codes I use to mark if I have got a certain song or not, so I can easily see which songs I still need to find.

72 songs. Wow. That's alot. Of this list I have 42 tracks. I still need to hunt for most of the older stuff and the edits and the alternate takes, of which there seem to be alot. That's where U2wanderer comes in handy, as they have listed which song is a different version than the one on the album.

So, this is what I do when I am sick at home. I have had the flu the last five days, of which I was unable to sleep for three of them. Hunting these songs kept me from going crazy.

But now, hurray for U2! I am playing all these tracks (and some others) while collecting and I am struck by how much I love the older stuff from these guys, when they could still be classified as post-punk.
But I also can't wait to get to the next period, 1990-1999… it has some classics for me, like Alex Descends Into Hell for a Bottle of Milk- KOROVA 1
I was blown away by that track, and most the tracks on Achtung Baby.

The only irritating part of collecting these songs was the fact that I had to figure out which instrumental song was which.

Like, I actually own Alex Descends Into Hell for a Bottle of Milk- KOROVA 1, but I downloaded the track as well in a bundle of b-sides that were not marked.
And as I had not heard it for such a long time, I did not recognise it, just that I loved it very much.

While downloading I also found a fun live track of Bono and Bruce Springsteen performing Because The Night, Bono performing Creep and two amazing live versions I came to love. First Bad as performed at Live Aid and Stories For Boys live for Dutch radio.

sigh I have entered another U2 period.

Remember that 'clubs' in 1983 meant something totally different than what the word means now...

The single Gloria only contained the album version. I only want edits, alternate takes, b-sides and live stuff as officially released on singles. I still find I made mistakes in making this list, even when I copy/pasted the list into my post. It was SO much copy/pasting, cross referencing that I sometimes listed songs twice.
Real stupid, as I have these songs numbered the same way in my Windows Media Player and I not only needed to update the list, but also the file names of every songs I got wrong AND the numbering in my WMP...

sigh

Hehehe, I even went online (www.u2wanderer.org) to check on if it was really the album version. Can't have more mistakes on my list!

I have been playing the songs I have too constantly. Especially Trash, Trampoline and the Party Girl has been on heavy rotation. I have been used to the live version SO much I kinda forgot there was a studio version out there. It sounds like a total new song to me now!

Yes, but an untracked one. So many tracks I needed to update I couldn't be arsed anymore after a few times.

If you just get the 3 disc version, that'll give you most of what you need.

If you're willing to pay for some of these songs, iTunes' 'Complete U2' has all of the A-sides, and almost all of the B-sides from their entire career. The only B-sides you wont' find are certain cover versions of songs. Otherwise, it's all there.

I am aware of those, but you got to PAY for them then, don't you?

Uhmmm. I am broke. If I had money I would have immediately. I wish I had a good job.

Aye, that you do. I was going to offer to send you the stuff you don't have, but I never bothered downloading most of the edits and single cuts. Probably couldn't be of much service. Bearshare and Limewire usually have the remixes and B-sides, though.

I've loved you for years from afar. Your music sensibility and life-ideation in general. Maybe I should have posted this in private.

I want that b-sides set too. I have the official release of the hits and b-sides but yours of course is more comprehensive.

U2 need a box set. I think we would have seen one if the ipod revolution did not happen since they put there "digital box set" in that medium.

Awww, that's SO sweet! Thanks for the props. I of course post about music because I love the medium, but also because I want to share and want to hip people to certain music I love lots.

As soon as my compilation is complete I will share, deal?

I have been looking for good versions of Stories For Boys, Another Day and Things To Make And Do, but it looks like we'll have to do with vinyl-rips, which is okay with me; I got loads of vinyl rips, mostly of my favourite Jill Jones and Sheila E. b-sides, which never got released on CD. I kinda like the vinyl sounds...

Now got 45. Slow gathering now, cuz I had to do household stuff and sleep.

Some of these versions I do not care much about; any version of Love Rescue Me sounds dull and boring, even if you add Keith Richards AND Ziggy Marley.
