Moonbeam, are you ready for your new obsession? As my plea for Beatles didn't hold, here's something you WILL love unconditionally.
2 Many DJ's! Short history lesson; Singer Stephen Dewaele and his guitarist brother David form Soulwax, a rock band reminisent of Crowded House. Influenced by Prince too. Recorded a Prince cover, even. Even interviewed the man himself for their Belgium MTV program. Started DJing under the name The Fucking Dewaele Brothers for a lark, first few sets were too silly for words, but as they are able to mix the weirdest records into a fun set, they become more popular as DJ's then as rock artists. Their popularity forces them to take on a new name and 2 Many DJ's is born. They have about a dozen albums out called 2 Many DJ's As Heard On Radio Soulwax (their radio program in Belgium). Their sets are fun (and might hip you to many new artists) because they play Led Zeppelin next to a Sven Vath remake of Je T'Aime Moi Non Plus. Amazing. Their latest Soulwax album mixes their dance experience with their melodic rock past and hands you an GREAT album...Any Minute Now... Got get it, go get it all!

I keep forgetting to tell you that;
Vive La Fete are Belgique and so are 2 Many DJ's. The Belgium bands are SO amazing. The 2 Many DJ's-DJ sets are filled with all that electronic stuff you can dance wildly to.

They're fun, and seem to become rather famous in other countries, but to me they're not the best Belgian group/dj's you can find at the moment. Neither is overrated 'Vive la Fête', for godsake.
Zita Swoon is more interesting to me. They're great live, and I've heard some great live-renditions of Prince-songs as well. I can't stop saying this: listen to 'Hot Hotter Hottest' for example. By far the most interesting funk/jazz/rock band of the last decennium that came from Belgium, must be the Wizards of Ooze. Check them out if you can. They've split a few years ago, but their material is really interesting. http://houbi.com/belpop/g...ofooze.htm [Edited 11/11/05 11:33am]

Next to that... Moiano is a big name in the jazz-world, and De La Vega is the latest soul-revelation. I don't know their material too well, so I won't start babbling.
There are probably more names to check out, maybe my fellow Belgians should help me out. And Huey, of course

Good tips, ML!
I loved Soulwax before the started fucking around with turntables. Well, proffesionally, that is. Aware of which nest they fell out off. Anyways. Isn't Deus Belgique as well?

Isn't Deus Belgique as well? dEUS is Belgian as well and their music is certainly worth checking out! . I'm a big fan of their earliest material (mid-nineties), and 'The ideal crash' (1999 I guess) is really sublime. They recently released their long-awaited album 'The Pocket Revolution'. The papers are enthusiast, and their concerts sold-out. I bought the album and went to a concert in the north of France, but I'm not too thrilled about neither of them. But again , who am I? It's certain Belgium has many things to offer musically, you just got to find your thing among it. (on repeat: check out the wizards of ooze, check out the wizards of ooze)

With a live version of Hot Hotter Hottest 30 days is long enough So baby I won’t call you anymore I wish you’d rush into my arms But every wish I wish is bound to do me harm The phone it rang around half past one And then I pull the plug out of the wall The conversations that I have They don’t amount to nothing Except for the ugly thoughts I have The doorbell rang around half past two And when I walk back inside my day was through I think I slept all afternoon And when I woke at night the moon was full The neon flashing in the streets And then I walk through town to a lazy beat I take the phone off of my ears Cause the music don’t sooth me It just makes me bleed I wonder if I’m done with thinking This prison room will be my grave But now I’m all alone and drinking Although I surely lost the taste In the morning when I woke I heard a noisy television host I switch the man out of my room Cause the games they don’t thrill me They just make me blue The window’s open The curtain flies I see the ghost of you before my eyes I shiver as I turn away I see the phone is waiting I dial and I pray [Edited 11/11/05 12:34pm]

I'm even worse. I've watched more episodes of MTV's NEXT than I care to mention.

Listening to 2 Many DJ's Prince medley now, on As heard on Radio Soulwax 6. Well, it's got Koo Koo by Sheila E. too... David Bowie and Kenny loggins are next... It also has mash ups of Destiny's Child and 10CC's Dreadlock Holiday. Very funny. And dancable.

If you're looking for good Belgian music, you MUST take a look at our dance scene. Amazing. Just to name a few:
- Sven Van Hees - Arsenal - Plastyc Buddha - Swirlpeople Not to mention all the deejays. Belgium is in fact renowned as a techno paradise (cfr. Fuse). (and i do mean techno, not the trancy shit everyone hears about.)
