I did a presentation on janet jackon.....

Did it for my hnd in media (yeah i know media is a "easy" degree, but its the only thing iam that interested in)

I talked about the long forgotten (thank god) Thriller ripoff "1814" mini movie. I love it really. Better then thriller thanx to the obvious cliche's to film noir etc....all shot in black and white of course.

Anyway, i had to talk about why the sound was interesting (using geek terminoledgy like diagetic etc...), the clip i chose was the scenes between the song "miss you much " and "the knowledge", where bj gets killed and janets watching some blakc and white cartoons with her dancing posse.

Very interesting sound wise.....i thought it was a good, original choice for my class. Anyone seen the mini movie?

bought it on VHS for $1. I enjoy it!

"I really need to talk to you guys..."

I think "The Knowledge" is my favorite RN cut, so it's a treat that it was featured in the film.

See the bit inbetween the 2, its very overblown and overly melodramatic. Perfect to talk about then smile

Yeah janet smashes stuff up in "the knowledge". Thats proberly my fav off that album. I need to hear it again. Janet did the whole "Lets smash glass" thing a year or 2 before Michael.

dee-lite "thank you everyday"

I was walking around
Looking at the ground
You're the flower
Between the cracks
That I found
Like a buttercup
Under your chin
You shine so bright
And cheer me up
I want to thank you everyday
For sharing with me
I want to thank you everyway
For sharing with me me me
You put me on top of the world
Right next to you
My lover you are my pearl
I love you you you
All night
All night
All right
All night
Standing in the shade
As flowers fade away
I am a fire sign
Won't you feel my solar power
My love takes you higher high higher
Watch the dandelion
Whose petals are flying
Sip the spring whispering
Thru my grapevine
I want to thank you everyday
For sharing with me
I want to thank you everyway
For sharing with me
We're all part of the world
Joined in a song
I'm so thankful we get along
I love you you you
All night
All right
Riding with the rhythm
Every nation with them

Love intoxication
Loving celebration

aint that a b*tch..i always thought they were making fun of janet with the highlighted verse.. i thought they were saying "i dont need a rhythm...every nation rhythm...

No, the folks in my class never even heard of the album it the movie came from. Whilst most people chose obvious shit like tarintino, citizen kane (geek) and gladiator, i chose one that had very little actual dialogue, and mainly consists of cliche as fuck, hard sound effects like failing rain, thunder, footsteps and "the gunshot". It inspired sin city lol

A good, lighthearted one. She liked it. I explained the differences with the diegetic and non diegetic (spelling? mad ) sound, and the lack of it. Also the contrast between the sounds of janet and dancers watching the cartoons, and the scene with the 2 boys shining shoes....etc...

what's that term mean in relation to the scene (i'm thoroughly familiar with that segment)?

oh, basically diegetic music is what the characters on the screen can actually hear. So the music video sequence of "Miss u much" is obviously diegetic as the dancers and janet hear the music and respond to it. (though infact, the music track is added again in editing but lets not get too technical)

Non diegetic is music that only we, the audience can hear. So any added music (like film score music) is music the characters cannot hear on screen but we the audience can.

Infact, the segment of the 2 boys outside in the rain i chose, had barely any non diegetic music but relied on sound effects that had been amplified by about 100 above the normal rate in movies. Funny thing is, the scene with the 2 boys outside has virtually no dialogue either....

When non diegetic and diegetic music is not used in a normal film scene, usually dialogue takes over, but that scene with the shoe-shiners is not the case. Instead, as I said, it relies almost solely for a while on sound effects. So interesting sound for a movie, or infact "mini movie" smile

hehe nice description!

We have heard non-diegetic music used as humor.. like in Coming To America when the audience thinks the Soul Glo music is non-diegetic as Eriq La Salle's jheri curl character rolls up in his car but then it turns out he is actually listening to the jingle ????? in his car lol (making it diegetic)

the fact it was a mini movie. neutral The content doesn't rip off thriller.

So every movie ever made has clearly been a rip-off of that first one from 1893? lol Are you getting 3% in media studies? razz

No, i mean it was the second "mini movie" music video, like jacko's. And the homevideo with the documentary included, smacks of thrillers promotional home video.

Come on voices, dont be naive. Janet knew how popular that "long form music homevideo" idea was, and nicked it for herself. Not many have tried. Hammer tried, puff daddy tried, but not many.

No, it wasn't. "Thriller" wasn't even the first long-form music home video. Not by a long shot. I think you need to be schooled in the media hammer

Voices, please, ur making this more complicated then it is. "thriller", as far as i know, was the first major homevideo release of a music video. Creating giant revenues etc.... it was another marketing tool. Janet did the same.
