Another example of the sorry state of today's music

in 1989 people were outraged when they found out that Milli Vanilli were lip synching that it ruined their career and this week Ashlee Simpson's new album is on pace to debut at #1 on the billboard album chart....shame

Nothing surprises me with today's tired ass music world. Now, if someone were to come out hard, fast, and funky and it became a hit, that would surprise me.

yep, and that's exactly the problem and why we have this "sorry state of music" today... the suggested procedure for "Millie Vanillie" improvment would be to replace her with some talented singer, still leaving her ugly face on the CD cover and in the video nod

That's one of the results of Millie Vanillie. Another one is, after them, everyone tried to prove that they could actually sing by stripping off all the instruments and doing unplugged accoustical albums that remind me of "Combe By Yah" or "Michael Rode The Boat Ashore", which bores the hell out of me. lol

They had a song called "money" funnily enough lol It was a "rap". Yeah that song was pretty funky. Hmmm, i swear those remixes off the milli vanilli album are dope. Surprising but true.

The quality of the Milli Vanilli release was never the problem. It was well produced and those that did sing on it were accomplished singers. The problem was that the "faces" of Milli Vanilli were utter fabrication which was perpetuated to the extreme to the point that it became, for lack of a better word, fraud.

Sad thing is, the release probably really didn't need the "faces". As many of you have commented, the songs were quite catchy on their own. It's just that folks got greedy. "Why make a little with these singers who aren't good eye candy, when we can make these pretty boys look like they're singing it and really rake it in?"

Thing is, they replaced them with guys who still sound like ass! All weird and stilted and soulless! How bad did Rob and Fabrice have to sound for them to get Arnold to do their vocals?

I'm not going to lie- I love that first Milli Vanilli album. Well, I loved it when I was 9. lol I still have the tape and it brings back memories!

My favorites were "All or Nothing," "It's Your Thing" and "More Than You'll Ever Know". lol

Now Ashlee Simpson is one of my all-time least favorites. barf

I didn't see that...I watched the train wreck that was her follow-up appearance on SNL

I think my ears stopped bleeding pretty quickly...only took 2 days.

OMG eek SAY IT AIN'T SO!!!!! THA HORROR!!!

Please, compairing Prince lipsyncing and Ashley Simpson lipsyncing is ridiculous.

Prince also uses recorded loops onstage... eek Must mean he really can't play any instruments.

The difference is Prince "unplugged" is talented and entertaining whereas Ashley Simpson "unplugged" is a violation of sound ordinances in most countries.

and what would that accomplish?
people would be giving ashlee credit for something she didnt do and some truely talented person would be left in the dark

I don't see a difference. Had his playback tape at some of the Emancipation TV performances for instance malfunctioned he would have been just as much a laughing stock. And Ashlee Simpson does sing live too.

Comparing Prince lipsyncing and Ashley Simpson doing it really isn't ridiculous at all.

The difference is that if Prince's playback tape had malfunctioned he wouldn't have done a stupid little jig then blamed it on his band. He would have been mad as hell. Granted we might then have to endure another several years of "protest" against the industry for "requiring lipsyncing" for live tv appearances.

Ashlee Simpson got where she is because she has a rich daddy. She won't be the first to make it that way. If you saw her return performance on SNL, sure she sang live...if you want to call that singing. Her voice has no character or emotion and she is about as entertaining as paint drying.

There are bands out there that refuse to lipsync or use pre-recorded loops, Rage Against the Machine, comes to mind. It can be done and Prince could do it. For some reason he chooses not to. I'm not a musician so I won't venture to guess why, but I've never seen Prince as NEEDING it.

And it is ridiculous to compare Prince vs Ashley Simpson lipsyncing. Both might face the embarrassment of a playback malfunction, but Prince's "redemption" appearance would more that show that he is a musician with talent.

Exactly correct. There's never been a question with Prince about his talent. An incident would be embarrasing, but it wouldn't change anyone's perception of his talent.

Ashley on the other hand has been viewed as having a record contract mainly because of who her sister is from day 1. Her incident verified what most people already thought of her lack of talent.
