I hate alicia even more then john. U heard her interviewed, what a twat. She spouts typical drivle that i dont even need to find a quote. Shit like "i want to connect so deeply to all my fans" "i want them to feel the songs" kinda shit. As for her music, well, again its aimed squarely at snobs who love to ponder about the technical side of music in small jazz clubs. Failing to realize again, that her shit is over 20 years old. Nothing wrong in liking her, but her, john, jose...all of them have that hype that they are so above pop music.

If the worst bone you have to pick with him is his name, then he's off to a great start. "Live It Up" is sheer R&B brilliance. Classic man-on-the-come-up-with-his-woman story with great vocal arrangements and a good beat. Peeps aren't writing like this anymore. Nice sprinkles of guitar and piano at the end as well.
Most contemporary R&B is about the booty, the breakup or the bounce. Hate all you want but dude's got skills. His weakness though, will be too many ballads.

JL is tight period. His sound has been heard before - that much is true. But that shouldn't stand to tarnish his talent. In an era when so many new artists can't even play an instrument, nevermind write their own songs, he is a throwback. You can criticize his voice, name, or whatever but dude has skillz.
Great debut album and I'm sure he'll bring more to the table in the future. Time has a way of revealing true talent. I would hate to see a similar forum discussion on Prince following his debut album. He didn't become the Prince we all appreciate with one album. Polled back then, most people here would say that that Prince dude is aiiight, nothing special though. Hell I've heard several people on this forum state that they didn't get turned on to Prince until his 3rd, 4th, or 5th album. Give ol' boy a little time my people before we trash him completely. When you're up against a trouble meet it squarely face to face. Lift your chin, set your shoulders, plant your feet and take a brace.

I won't "hate" on John Legend because I think he is talented. But IMO he's the male counterpart to Alicia Keys. His album is very sample-heavy. I can't acknowledge him as a saviour of modern R&B just because he plays piano and can sing a nice hook. I can't get past Ordinary People being a bite off of D'Angelo's 'Africa'... if you've heard the acoustic piano version of 'Africa' then you should know what I'm talking about.
But hopefully he along with Ms. Keys will get some of that artist development that's so lacking in all music right now. We all get so caught up in trying to spot the next big thing that we never give the artist room to grow. I'm gonna give him a chance because one day he might do something that's a masterpiece.
